    my route 1st draft

I'd try to visit southern Utah if at all possible. Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks wouldn't bee too much of a detour from the Las Vegas area if you're traveling from Reno/Sparks to Arizona, and they're definitely worth seeing. If possible, I'd do something like this from Vegas to...

Anyone here using a Satellite Phone?

This is what my next purchase will be. Seems like a great solution. Here's a link on Amazon for anyone interested.

    My van camper

Great suggestion. I spent a week in Beg Bend and was blown away. What a great, under-appreciated park. I gotta get back there! Looks like a beautiful place. What's the camping situation like there?

    Anker PowerCore+ 26800

This is awesome. I have a 2300 mAh, a 5600 mAh, and a 16000 mAh battery pack, but you can never have enough. I didn't know Anker made one as high capacity as the one you've got. They make good stuff. And I'm surprised that the panel charged it that quickly. That's great. Thanks for sharing.

    Forced onto the road..but where?

See Bob's boondocking article for a primer, and then check out freecampsites.net to find places close to you. I think what you're doing for your husband/partner's 93-year-old father is great. Good luck!

    Free E books

I wrote a Kindle book about hiking in Arches National Park, and it's free through Friday the 22nd. Get it here. With free dispersed camping just ~10 minutes from the entrance, Arches is a very accessible park for vandwellers...

    hello

In addition to the websites mentioned above, Campendium.com is a good (and relatively new) one to know about and have in your quiver for finding places to stay.

    Managing storage in your car

I travel and camp in a RAV4, which isn't quite as small as a Scion but is pretty darn close. I've found that making use of otherwise "dead" vertical air space is very useful. So in other words, stacking stuff up high, hanging stuff from the ceiling, and having a shelf. Here's the rear shelf I...

    Beginner

Sorry to hear that you're having a tough time. I have a RAV4 that I have spent 100+ nights in, so an Xterra is definitely doable. First you'll want the basics, namely (1) sleeping comfort, (2) privacy, and (3) temperature comfort.  For #1, you'll probably want to build a simple sleeping...

Suggestions for my new Prius setup?

You mentioned camping mattresses. For what it's worth, this is the one I use in my SUV, and it's fantastic. You won't need a mattress topper with it. And I've found that a rectangular sleeping bag liner fits perfectly over it and functions as a fitted sheet.

The shelf with the clothes net underneath has been so great! Before that I had a big plastic set of drawers set up on one of the seats, and that held my clothes. I like the net much better. Are you talking about one of the retractable things that covers the cargo area? Yeah, I had to get rid of...

Part-time SUV-dweller new to the forum

Hi everyone. My name is Tristan. I joined the forum about 6 months ago and have been lurking for ages but only started posting recently. I'm not a vandweller, but I travel and camp a lot in my little SUV (a 2011 Toyota RAV4). I call it SUV RVing. I'm a 30-year-old writer based out of northern...
