One Awesome Inch - Van Build

I fiberglassed over the holes in my floor.

    New Goal Zero purchaser

I too have the Goal Zero 350. I use it mostly to run my CPAP machine. I've got the 30 watt briefcase solar panel as well. Also have the speaker for my MP3 (really good sound) and a pair of the LED lights for my campsite or to use inside the van. I got the charging cable that allows you to...

    Mexico??

I purchased a TelCel usb hotspot in Ensenada. Worked great on my laptop. There are areas where connecting is dicey. No problem in populated areas.

    Mexico??

I can't comment on the east coast of Mexico. But, if my experience in Baja and down the Pacific coast of the mainland is typical of the rest of the country you'll be fine. Lots of places to camp. Campgrounds, Pemex stations, restaurant parking lots, free spots. Just don't stay in an isolated...

    Internet for Baja

We spent the winter in Baja 2 years ago and plan on doing it again this year. We used a TelCel banda ancha or wireless antenna for our laptops. Got great reception and were almost never out of range. I use Hughes Net at my place in the woods here in the PNW. It's pretty expensive for what you...

Looked at Mattresses at Wally World and Need Advice

I'll triple the bread knife. I just added the Costco 3" memory foam/gel topper to our van' s bed. The bread knife made short work of lopping off the excess. Got mine from the kitchen. Don't tell my wife.

What did You, do to your Freedom Machine today?

I've been busy getting the van ready for our winter travel. I put in a second battery to run the fantastic fan and a couple of 12 volt outlets for other electronic gear. Got some running boards installed to make it easier to get in and out of the van. Larger screw eyes to replace the previous...

    Where You Be

Pacific Northwest. The rainy winter is coming soon. We're prepping the van for our winter get away to Southern California, Baja, and the mainland Mexico. Departure date in about 5 weeks.

    Cooking Pot Bath

We must have gone through USAF basic about the same time. Still use Prell for a body wash. The hair in my nether regions is still sleek and manageable.:P

What kind of music do you like?

Classic rock, Country rock, Folk rock, Tropical rock, some Alternatve rock and anything by The Grateful Dead! Rock on!!

    Are most traveling alone?

I have traveled alone and prefer to have female companionship. The compromise is I'm not a full time vandweller. We spend the warm months at our sticks and bricks in the PNW and the rest of the time in our van looking for that mythical beach or perfect camping spot where it's perpetually shorts...

Looked at Mattresses at Wally World and Need Advice

I took the topper off and slept on the dense foam mattress below that. In the future I'm just going to avoid places that cold. :D

Looked at Mattresses at Wally World and Need Advice

Last winter in Colorado my memory foam mattress froze solid as a brick in 20 degree weather. I had no idea it would do that. If I was going to a cold environment I'd look for a different bed material. My .02 cents, your mileage may vary. :-/

    LP tank in van

No I don't stealth very much. More of a boondocker.

    LP tank in van

Thanks for the info. Mr. McNoodly, really nice set up. I'm thinking I'll put that bottle in a box on my rear cargo carrier.

    LP tank in van

I upgraded from those 1 pound green disposable propane tanks to a 4 pound mini tank. I'll use this for my propane stove while cooking outside the van. How safe would it be to carry the tank inside the van in a milk crate with the valve closed? Should I be worried about the gas leaking out and...

    Where you headed?

Wondering where others are heading for during the colder months. We spend our summer's in the Pacific Northwest. Last two winters in the Florida Keys. This winter we're going to try Baja and take the ferry over to Mazatlan. Well, that's the plan for now. Who knows how the trip will finally shake...

    Average MPG in your Van

2008 Ford E350 Triton 5.4 V8 with a high top. On our trip last winter from Seattle to Key West we got 12 - 16 mpg. Depending on temperature and terrain. Colder and higher less. Warmer and flatter more. Cruising at 65 mph.

What's your opinion about kitchens on vans?

Having had multiple systems in an RV I owned. I opted for no systems in my van. Now there are no problems with water leaks, smelly holding tanks and expensive repairs. I follow the KISS principle: 5 gallon water can, simple shower, bucket toilet (wag bag) and cook on my propane stove outside the...

How important is stealth to you while traveling?

Stealth isn't a big factor for us. We stay outside of towns for the most part. Truck stops, national forests, and campgrounds. In town we sleep in friends driveways or pay parking lot. Sometimes an RV campground. We stay away from places that will get a knock on the door because we're out of...
