"Balloon"
The story of two east German families, 8 people in all, who had by 1979 constructed a hot air balloon to make a daring escape to west Germany and feedom. This is a remake of the original movie....."Night Crossing". The movie is captioned so read fast.
The film is based on the true story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families who, on September 16, 1979, escaped from East Germany to West Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon during the Inner German border-era, when emigration to West Germany was strictly prohibited by the East German government.
They were inspired by a magazine article showing the hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque, NM and after scavenging to buy matireals so not to rise any suspicions of the police, they were able to make a functioning hot air balloon. Although primative it was adequate to do the job. They launched from a clearing in a forest where they wouldn't be detected and ascended to an altitude of 6500 ft on a cold September 16 night with a westward wind. Their flight of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) took a little over 30 minutes. When they landed they asked for asylum and were granted their freedom.

West Virginia Public Broadcasting
Appalachian Skies showcases some of the beauty of the state.
This is some of the scenery of the state of West Virginia that I thought some Nomads may find interesting. During Covid a lot of RVing families and Nomads came here thinking they may be less vulnerable to it given the isolation. The photography is recorded both on the ground and the areal views photographed using drones. A lot of eastern Kentucky, north eastern Tennessee, and north western North Carolina look similar.

KET (Kentucky Educational TV) The story of Bourbon Whiskey which began around 1794 in Kentucky. Bourbon was a departure from earlier whiskeys made mostly from Rye grain which imparted a robust flavor and grew abundantly in the colonies. Barley was a secondary grain used in Whiskey at that time. Wheat, Barley, and Rye are of the same cereal grass family. Where Bourbon is different is that it's made of at "least" 51% Corn. Rye and Barley may be used to make up the various remaining amounts.
Bourbon Whiskey started out much like a frontier medicine but had a meteoric surge in popularity soon after it's inception. By the time it was made in enough quantity to export down the Ohio River to the Mississippi and on to New Orleans it was on it's way to world fame.

My granddad, uncle & wife's granddad all made corn whiskey in TN. It's still made. I posted a 3 pot SS & copper new stills for $90/shipped about a week ago. Legal to make in personal amounts in most places. Most 180 proof aka 90% alcohol. Our government poisoned many Americans during prohibition to scare people away from untaxed whiskey. One government report said that of 480,000 gallons of liquor confiscated in New York in 1927, nearly all contained poisons & that's only 1 report of 1 place at 1 time. SAD.

A documentary about the Ohio River and those who work the Tow Boat trade. This also includes interviews with Capt Fred Way (former Capt of the Delta Queen) and Harlan Hubbard author/artist who wrote the book "Shanty Boat" (the story of "River Nomad's" who were often called "River Rat's") Their small barge like house-boats were free drifting rigs that first appearing in the 1850 until just after the 1950's. Rivers were once full of them as po'folks resorted to built them to have a better life while living on the river.
A few years ago I met an old woman and her son who was taking care of her. She was wanting to chat (we were all seated at a fast food place) and I listened to her tell me the story of growing up on a shanty boat. I explained that I knew about those boats, lived on the bank of the Ohio River, and listened to her tell me about how her father operated a ferry boat in Louisa, Ky near their shanty boat. Her mom & dad raised her and five sisters on the shanty boat. She was around 80 years old at the time.

I was curious about Airline Travel 90 to 100 years ago and found this short film. Understand that this was in the 1930's before radar, transponders, and the type of air traffic control we have today. Communication with bases may have been done with telegraphy (Morse code key(er), and triangulation to chart the airliner's position. Yet it is surprising how well and far people of nearly 100 years ago could travel.
This story takes place in the UK's Croydon airport west of London. Airliners from different countries are shown operating from this airfield and numerous functions of the aviation industry that enable it to operate smoothly and safely.

A comic musical movie with an Appalachian theme from just before 1960. Made after the Cartoon series by Al Capp titled "L'il Abner". Capp drew the series for years so that kids could enjoy it but adults could read political commentary between the lines. (this just the history of the cartoon strip)
But it is quite relevant to our times.
