Globe AZ info ?

Greetings. Hopefully this is the correct forum to ask questions.
Does anyone have info about lands around Globe ? I noticed a few places south of there.
I'll be visiting some folks in the Phoenix area at months end. I was maybe going to check Globe for a coupla weeks.

There is ongoing road construction along Hwy 60 between Globe and Phoenix. The area is beautiful, the road is twisty. There have been a lot of large fires in that area in the past few years, and I haven't been that way since they happened. There is a nice arboretum just south of Superior that I used to visit at least once a year. I no longer winter in Apache Junction (Eastern part of Phoenix) so I don't get that direction much now.

Globe and Superior are copper mining areas, so you will see some open pit mining.

The Walmart in Apache Junction allows overnight camping in case you need a place in town. If you go a bit east to Payson there is a lot of camping around that area. The Walmart in Payson also allows overnight camping, as does the casino on the south side of town.

Also, AZ511.gov will give you road conditions and if/when roads are closed due to accidents or construction. You want to check it especially for Hwy 60 between Globe and Phoenix. Also, there are a lot of interstate closures on weekends in Phoenix right now. It helps if you know where beforehand and can figure a route around it.

I usually spend a few nights a year at the Oak Flats campgrounds. It appears part of it anyways is on a burial grounds. But I enjoy visiting a few nights a year. I’ve seen a native I believe Apache come around and give a little explanation. But it’s so peaceful and the people I’ve met there have been so nice. They have a couple pit toilets. Picnic tables and fire rings. I drove through Globe one time heading over and south. If I recall, Globe is a fair size town. I found other kind of out of the way campgrounds (blm) that were free and 14 day limit.
I stayed one time in the blm area where you go in around the south side of Superstition Mountains. The reviews mentioned shooting all hours of the night. I was like, oh yeah right. I went past where it was more of a gun range and thought I found a pretty good spot. My dog and I got to sleep and around eleven a group of off road vehicles came roaring in with music blaring. They stopped not knowing I was there. Then started shooting automatic gunfire towards the mountain. Right over my camper. With my truck camper it was easy to leave. And I did.

Globe is an old mining town, if you are planning on commuting to Phoenix forget it as US 60 detour is long, busy and out of the way. Absolutely beautiful drive through the Salt River Canyon and onto the reservation but Sho Low, Snowflake and then Holbrook are all small towns with supplies. I recently have stayed in the Holbrook area on my way to and from Utah as after Holbrook there isn’t much besides a few reservation gas stations and grocery stores til you get to Blanding Utah. Reservation roads often have rough pavement stretches so beware. I would look just south of Casa Grand and the base of the mountains at BLM land, or if wanting closer to Phoenix maybe around the Congress or Wickenburg area. There are Escapee parks in both Congress and Casa Grand if you are a member.

There is a lot of camping both north and south of Payson. There are Tonto National Forest campgrounds as well as open dispersed camping. Lake Mary Road from Flagstaff to Hwy 87 has lots of camping in the Coconino National Forest and is a nice drive. From there south to the small towns of Strawberry, Pine, then Payson there are also many camping possibilities. Going south from Payson it is approximately 70 miles to the East Valley and as I said, the Walmart in Apache Junction allows overnight urban camping. Also, there is a Cracker Barrel restaurant that allows overnight parking at the Higley Rd exit from US 60, across from Banner Gateway Medical Center hospital. I did verify that with them as I go to the MD Anderson Cancer Center there for checkups and figured I might need to stay overnight if I had an early appointment.

Currently on the RVParky app, Apache Junction Walmart Supercenter does not allow overnight parking. Nor does the Mesa Supercenter.

Payson Walmart allows overnights.

Don’t you mean HOT weather! Late October and November in Southern AZ will remind you of late July in Bozeman
