I'm so excited. lol I have a couple questions : My reason for getting on the road is freedom.  I'm a 55 y/o woman  and this part of my life is all about me. I'm extremely private and don't want to be in pictures and videos. Is there an area at gatherings that is strictly no audio/video and no pictures? I don't want to be insensitive to others and I watch and learn from those on youtube yet I'm camera shy. By choice. I'll take pictures and videos too for my family to know what's going on (my sons are on board with me doing what everyone else says is crazy yet they want updates and I'll use my spot phone  for them as well.) and also just to see where I've been for myself and I won't include anyone in those that feel like I do about pics and things. Is this too weird? I'm going free of all social sites as well and will rarely use phone and computer. I guess I'm asking is it possible to be invisible as I enjoy this new life? I enjoy meeting new people and can be very social. It seems everyone here understands we may need our alone time. I don't want to be in pics and videos though. Is this possible?  Thanks for your help.

Wow, congratulations, Raine!!!! Very excited for your new adventures.

I haven't been to a gathering but I remember reading about this very same privacy question before in a thread. Bottom line was, at a public gathering there can be no expectation of privacy with regards to photos and videos, permission and releases aren't required, and although many people will respect your request to not be photographed you could well end up in drone/group/distant shots. I recall someone mentioning it was pretty easy to stay away from the main group and for me, I'd just wear a hat and try to be aware of the folks taking pics. I don't like mine taken either so that's what I'll probably do.

Have a wonderful time, hope to see you out on the road somewhere ( and I never take pics, so you're safe :D )

I am the same way. In group settings, I try to be aware of those taking pictures but nowadays that's difficult. So I tend to stay on the fringes and keep a low profile. And mostly avoid groups.

Although it sometimes seems as if everyone with a van has a youtube channel, I don't think we're any more likely to be filmed or photographed at the RTR or similar gathering than at a concert, sporting event, or a trip to Walmart.
Cameras and cell phones are everywhere.  I don't like to be photographed either, and probably haven't intentionally had my picture taken in ten years, but we all appear in the background of other people's memories.  The only way to avoid that is if you never leave your house.
Get a big floppy hat and get out there :)

And big sunglasses

Thank you all for your insight. Just added big hat and sunglasses to my list :)

There are always a few people at the RTR who do not want to be photographed. As long as they make that known everyone else will try to not photograph them but even so they may end up in a group shot. Sunglasses and a big hat are a great idea though!

To tell the truth, unless you're doing an interview (or are standing right beside someone who is), if you're photographed passing in the background, you simply don't have much of a chance of being recognized. Most people are focusing on the 'main event'.

And one reason is that you are 'out of context'. Your best friend could see you on YouTube, and call her DH, and say, "Look! Isn't that Raine?" He stares at the screen, then says, "No, that's not Raine -- are you crazy? That woman is a lot older/younger/shorter/taller/etc than Raine. Besides, what would she be doing THERE?"

"Oh, your're probably right. Now that I look again, she doesn't look anything like her."

Ask the cops, and they'll say the same thing. They'll have 25 people who saw the man waving a gun outside a 7-Eleven in broad daylight, and write down the descriptions: He was either tall, short, or medium height, somewhere between 17 and 85. He was either white/black/Asian. He had black, brown, blonde or gray hair, and brown, black, blue, gray or green eyes. He was either dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, a one-piece jumpsuit with stripes, a suit/vest/tie, or he was stark naked. When they catch him, it was a 15-yo white kid with a lot of curly red hair in a big 1968 afro, wearing shorts, a red muscle shirt and pink flipflops with blinking lights, and he's still got the Popsicle he was waving around.

In other words: you're pretty much invisible.

A babushka style scarf big glasses and clothes you don't normally wear for big gatherings. Otherwise wear scrubs and a medical mask. You can park away from the rest and post a sign : NO PICTURES NO VIDEOS and make sure you cover up your license plate. Good luck.

I suspect that a sign saying "no pictures, no videos" will just cause people who didn't have a camera with them to run back and get one.

Just act normal and blend in.
