I had the front windows of my van tinted which cost me too much money I think. I wanted to have the other windows tinted but could not afford it so I did some research. If you but the film you can do it yourself easily. Check out this link.

 
I found a better technique for PO folk like me. This link is for people who don't have much money for expensive tools. This guy shows a super easy way to do it.

 
When I worked in corporate,  I met a guy who was an architect who had been hired to upgrade many of the windows in the building/lab I worked in.  They were installing window tinting and the engineer I worked with brought him into the office to explain to us about the tint film that was being installed.  He was curious to see if he may want to install the same in his home or Van. 

The guy explained that all tinting film isn't the same.  Some of it only tints, but newer generations are made with chemicals which can block out heat in the hot summer and allow heat in during the cold winter.
A lot of the automotive tint film is just tint to cut down the effects of bright sunlight.
