Hunkered in the bunker.
I am doing the "Happy Dance".  One of the critical bits of functionality I thought lost in the change from Win7 to Win8/8.1 was the "Snippet Tool",  which I used a LOT to do screen captures.  Great for building my archives of van and RV pics from sites that don't allow the right-click "Save as" feature.  Win8 apparently did delete this very important application.  But the Microsoft gods have smiled upon us mere mortals, and returned it in Win8.1.  I googled "Snippet Tool" today, and Lo!  There were the instructions to bring it back to my task bar!  My funky little laptop has had it's productivity raised from 75% to 80%.    Still working on the rest.
Now, if I can find a way to increase the typing buffer size and speed, so my slow typing doesn't keep over riding the computer, I will be even happier.   :D

great!

The first thing I did with Windows 8 was to try to get it set up as much like Vista as possible. Every now and then I go look at the other screen but I really am not fond of it.

Gypsy you need to look into START IS BACK. http://startisback.com/
It's all of a whopping $3.00 and will convert you desktop and load into a 95% look and feel of Vista or Windows 7.

Lee if you ever want a bit more functionality in a screen capture program TechSmith SnagIt is just about the gold standard. Been using it for years.
In my case it's great to do a recording of changing settings etc and then send that to a client.

I tried various screen capture programs, but my laptop is very cantankerous about what it allows me to download!  Never could find one that it wouldn't block.  Snippet Tool does all I need, in a very user-friendly fashion.
I will investigate "Startisback" to see if it will help me.

IF I 'upgrade' it will be to Win7.

where did you get windows 10? do you think it is as bad as Win 8.1?

I installed it. Didn't like it so I uninstalled it. They say ms is giving free upgrade to 10 from 8 but mine said it was like a preview of 10. I think ms is going into the direction of charging you yearly to use the software or at least they are trying to.

They certainly are. They have Office 365. Checking into that, it seems a good deal, unless you prefer pirated stuff.

I use open office. Totally free and completely legal. When winblows starts charging yearly I will dump there programs and platforms completely and go 100% open source. I can't be bled anymore.
