Search YouTube for "WiFi antennas".  You'll find a ton of info on WiFi theory and homemade antennas.

i don't know anything about WiFi antennas.... are they line-of-sight?

Yeah.  And the range isn't super long, either.  The transmitters just aren't all that powerful, by design.  If they were, everybody would be interfering with everybody else.

The idea is to be able to sit outside a McDonald's or Barnes & Noblet in your car and use their WiFi without having to go inside.

This can be great at night when they are closed.  You can sit outside in the parking lot streaming videos for free.

I've seen all sorts of plans for homemade wifi boosters online.

Alas, i have also seen all sorts of posts online complaining that they don't work for crap.

:)

I realitically and reliably get 1/8 mile range

the 36H standard one with the 9db antenna
