Why no snowbird schedule in NM?

NM just saw record freezing cold a few days ago and it happens every couple of years.

Today the weather said everything across the state was in the 20's or below.

I live about 8 miles north of the Mexican border in Hereford AZ.  That's about 9 miles south of Sierra Vista.  The elevation at my house is about 4900 ft., 27 degrees last night.  Yesterday the high only reached 51, but I still managed to take a crisp and beautiful scooter ride into town.

Ummm, there's no snowbird schedule in New Mexico because there's little warmth here in the winter! Actually the days can get really warm but nights are horrible. As I type this it's 26° and that temp started 2 weeks ago. Going down to 20° by 5:00 a.m.

Last week it was -1° with a "feels like" of -12° that is just too friggin cold. Most of New Mexico is high elevation. (I'm at 7500 feet on the plains just east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.)

I'm headed to AZ in 2 weeks. Too old for this type of cold.

NM is high elevations all over, greater than 3000' or so. That's because it's the southern extension of the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide. By time you get over to Parker AZ, you're down to 432' elevation, and Yuma is only 141'.

That's some beautiful country right there. I hung out most of last winter on the Empire Ranch north of Sonoita. Heard some bozo started a fire over there. Do you know anything about that?

My impression driving through NM on I25 from Trinidad, CO (Walmart allows overnight parking) down to I10 to Yuma, is that NM is generally higher elevation than AZ along the I10 stretch.

It was late April 2017 and I camped out one night a ways off of I10 northwest of Deming. Tolerable nighttime temps, but that wasn't January. Though much more tolerable than Trinidad, CO.

I also use city-data to check historical local weather patterns and other demographic information about a locality.

NM would have its place on a migration route coming from/going to SE CO to/from SW AZ.
I actually stayed at that Walmart on my migration route from CO on my way to AZ a month ago! Yep, got down to 13°F one night, on the Navajo rez at Canyon de Chelly, and I ran out of propane. My Doggess and I sure snuggled that night!

I was at Empire ranch a few days ago and didn't see any signs of a fire from the main through road but did not go to all the campsites.

Thank you, Bullfrog! I might haul down there for the weekend.

There were some people with horse trailers setting up in the group are, but other than that I only saw 3 dirt bikes and one truck camper. Probably some type of horse event over Thanksgiving.

Sorry for the late response, but no local fires around here that I know of.
