Just wondering person preferences between planet fitness or anytime fitness... Why you chose the one you did and if you like it or wish you had joined a different one. Or if anyone's done the YMCA thing, I was wondering about that one, too.

Thanks!

I was with 24 hour fitness for a while partly because I could buy a voucher at Costco for 2 years, allowing me to not have to deal with their salespeople. They're super aggressive and try to suck out every last dime they can. Once I got in they were fine but I wound up letting that one lapse because I found myself often traveling to places where they did not have a presence.

I just joined Planet Fitness and so far I'm liking it. They have individual showers, tons of locations, and low prices upfront.

I don't know much about Anytime Fitness - I've seen them around but not in great numbers. Do you mostly stay in one place or would you need to be able to use multiple locations?

I'd be traveling...

Anytime Fitness has a lot more locations and is in many smaller cities and towns. They are more expensive (about $40 per month). If I could afford it, I would have the Planet Fitness membership too. They have more locations in the bigger cities.
No chain gyms are going to be everywhere that you need them to be. So I use showers at homeless shelters, beaches, laundromats, friends and relatives houses, local swimming pools, etc; when a gym isn't available. And sometimes I just have to do without showers for a week or two. I still stay clean with baby wipes and washing up in a public bathroom.

Even if you're planning on working out, I would highly recommend having your own toilet & shower in your van.

The convenience and cost savings are substantial.

My van is a low top, and I still have both.

My general take on gyms is that a convenient location is the key factor in picking one. If it's not convenient, it's easier to just not go. For me, that means L.A. Fitness since I drive by one every day on my way to and from work. For someone living on the road full time the convenience factor changes from the best location to the most locations in the areas where you'll be traveling. That just requires a little research, which it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job with.
