I have been living full time in a 22ft travel trailer for the last 1.5 years traveling around the US. I really enjoy it and I am thinking about downsizing to a high top van to be a lot more mobile and free. I have no home base though. So if I buy a van and want to customize the inside I have no place to work on it. Any ideas? The campgrounds I stay out would not allowed it. I wonder if those places that store your boats and RV's would let me? Hhmmm.

Go into NF or BLM land far enough to not be disturbed... And do what ya need to get done... As long as you leave the area as it was or better when your done...

The boatyard is a very good idea. I know they allow construction work to be done on the boats, why not a van? That and storage yards too.

When you get down to the smaller finish work that doesn't involve stuff scattered around outside ,park at a Home Depot and work in their lot. It saves driving to the store every time you need a part. We've stayed overnight to finish a few jobs without any problems. For larger jobs do as SoulRaven suggests - public land is a very good place to work undisturbed.

I gutted my van out in a coffee shop parking lot in Ames, IA last summer. Went pretty well actually!!

gus

I are in a working-class area of a major city, you'll see people working on there cars right there in the street. Saw a guy with his RV parked up against a park redoing the interior last week. Had the collapsible table saw plugged into his battery and the saw horses set up beside.

The important thing is keep traffic clear, don't piss anyone off to the point they call the cops and work during mid-day. Clean up everything by about 6pm and no one will hassle you.

If you needed a few weeks to do this job, and to keep out of the weather and still have a place to sleep, I don't see why you couldn't rent a storage unit for a month, as long as their wasn't a security guard or a mgr hanging out on the grounds.

Scarlett

What area of the country are you in? Maybe some one on here that has stick and brick may be able to help you.

VanGirl

Storage area?? Would need 24hr access, either ask before renting(doubt they will, liability and mess) or rent an area, work at night and clean, clean, clean after each session. Careless people have ruined things for others.

Oh yeah, saw on one of the major Yahoo groups(van living), someone trying to get a list of fellow van dwellers with property access to let others work on vehicles, will try to find it and see if anything came of it and post info here.

On weekends, you can try an office complex.
