I used to keep the TV on for the noise in the old days, now I do that with the computer.
It's on 10 hours a day, day in and day out.
I have too many irons on the fire to be sedentary, but I will quit eating before I quit interneting.
The internet is 'company' in a way, and there is always something to learn, entertainment, news, and the ability to talk with friends from far away places, buy what you need from 3 states over, and pay your bills on time.
True,  it is addictive and overused, and it may be a crutch in these social distancing days, but if so, I will not cut my crutch in half to save money, or to comply with proper and acceptable usage attitudes.
We are all different and have different needs, and we are also adults, who can decide how to spend our time.
As we get older and more frail, the internet will be our most available connection to the world and other people.
Internet and I, we are old friends now, we first met in the early 90's.

And Nature Lover I hear you.
Be well everyone, and web on!

I was good with 5GB monthly with rollover until I switched to living in a van.
I actually spend less time on the internet than when I was in an apartment.
But all of it is coming through the phone. Whether I'm using my phone to look stuff up or navigate.
Or as a hotspot for the Mac so I can watch stuff or browse the net.
Though really I almost never watch youtube or movies anymore.
I'm spending more time out and about, or playing music, reading or practicing Japanese.

If you want to limit your bandwidth, some sites like Twitter have low bandwidth modes to limit the size of graphics and stop video and audio from automatically playing as your scroll past.
Likewise in your web browser settngs and email settings you can turn off graphics and video media types.

Of course you can do 'wardriving'. Which is where you drive around looking for open WIFI spots.
In Brooklyn there are a few community based free WIFI. I know of a few in Redhook and in Bedstuy.
They are usually slow, but good enough for email. Maybe late night video when nobody is using it.

I have an unlimited data plan with Verizon and for the last month was at my condo in Colorado. I only have my JetPack for TV and VOIP while there - no land lines. I typically only watch the news and maybe one video at night (PBS nightly news and maybe a documentary). While I was there, I averaged about 4 gig a day or 120+ gig per month.

When i had Verizon's truly unlimited plan i used it for all my TV and data usage.

i am like naturelover i live on the internet i work on it i play on it i watch videos on it i upload and download on it yes i lived before it but now it here i cant live without it. my pc is never turned off nor is my phone. i sit up late hours and get up before the sun rises. i tried a verizon hot spot before but they ripped me off double charging me and still trying to get money out of me. yes verizon is good but also a thief. i dont know what i will do on the road other than stop off various locations for free internet like mcdonalds and libraries and such. i am hoping someone will come up with an idea within decent price to make internet unlimited and more or less free for all.

I'm hoping the community wifi thing takes off more.
It's an idea that has been bouncing around the tech nerd circles for years.
There are a lot of reasons it's good besides us van-lifers.
Though honestly in many cases you are going to find it is content restricted like you will in public library. Ironically one of the original reasons we were proposing this way back when, was to bypass the curating of content that some ISPs and search engines do. And do some IP filtering to protect the identity of users. It's also swell to save your phones data usage.
