While studying the house battery system and trying to find if I have a solenoid, I see this under the engine battery (yellow arrow).  Anybody know what it is?  It will save me from having to lift the battery out.  I followed the cables back and took photos of where they were going.  I couldn't tell if it was going to the alternator or something immediately behind it.

You talking about the rectangular metal thing with fins? That would be your battery isolator.

Thanks gsfish and ballenxj. I knew somebody here could tell me.
That's certainly what it looks like. I have no idea how old it is. Looks rusty. Now to ask myself if I want to change it to a solenoid or to live with it as is.

it's a dual battery isolator even if it still works I would put a good quality solenoid in its place. highdesertranger

Yes its a dual battery isolator and if that's from the RV factory/conversion company,  maybe they 'turned up' the voltage on the alternator to compensate for it. Maybe not.
