Most of us are using vans from the Big 3.

Ford, GM, and Dodge

They all have their ups and downs.

Which do you own?

yeah , good point, so I just voted!

They are all different and have the typical quirks of their makers.

Being very experienced in mechanics and vehicles I was debating a long lost on the issues and virtues of each brands big vans in the typical 90s and newer models. Probably not worth the trouble unless it's a sticky for those van shopping to read.

My daily driver and "camping" van is the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan.  Good mileage, fairly reliable and very versatile.
I inherited my late father's 1986 Ford E150 cargo van.   Planned to build it up for camping and eventual live-in but it is too rusted and worn.  I had driven it a lot since Dad bought it new so I am familiar with Gen Three Fords.  He had a '75 E150 before it.
A couple years ago I bought my 1988 Ford E150 Conversion Van, by a company called "Action Vans".  It's got problems so is taking awhile for the rebuild.

I also have one of each. My 86 Dodge is the best, hands down, in all categories.

Hahaha. There are plenty of other choices such as the VWs but I'm sure the majority of people are firmly in the domestic category if only because of cost, size, and availability.

I will write something up shortly. I see so many questions about common issues and about opinions on respective vans. Hopefully it will be helpful. I just wrote a whole bunch in the van safety section and I'm typically on my mobile so it may take a little. I'll put it in Van or Mechanics when it's put together.

I'll look up your post. Thanks

Something like a cross reference chart of the major makes and generations would be good, notating the pros and cons, and typical problems of each.
Like the particular generation of Chevy/GMC vans with the unfortunate "white paint peeling" issue.  Or the Ford van with the plug spitting issue.

Yeah Lee
Something like that would be a valuable addition to the forums.

Those are exactly some of the things I was going to write up. Weak and strong points of each, common issues (and fixes), as well as suspension info.

When i was looking I skateboarded town around to various repair joints and asked the techs which of the big three they'd choose in my price range

I was looking for a Chevy. I bought a Dodge as it was the best that came up in the area I was in.

No regrets. A 318 is no powerhouse, but a SBC 350 is not as efficient and I did not want a 305
