hi,
i am looking at a chevy express cargo van 2009 1500 awd with 324k mlles and original engine in it. 5.3 liter v8
mostly highway miles.
the guy wants 10k for it but then he says he has rebuilt engine and rebuilt transmission. which the warranty is void on one of those ( i forget which probably transmission) if he sells it to another private party.
he says he has a put in new in 2019:
battery
Transfer case front output shaft yoke
catalytic converter and 4 O2 sensors
rear axle seals
both front axles CV joints and bearings
trans cross member

he says 10k firm but a couple weeks ago he had it at 12k

he says he paid 7k for it and put 5k in it and he also says if he doesnt get what he wants for it hell keep it.

my main concern is the high mileage and because it is a van when/if it needs an engine replacement that can roll into the thousands of dollars.
how should i go about dealing with this person and what would be a fair price?

That is extremely high mileage for 10K But just my opinion. Good luck.

yeah i agree but the guy seems really stuck at that price he even put firm in his ad lol. i would say 6k maybe 7k top dollar.

just out of curiosity why is high mileage a deal breaker?

This is only my opinion - A high mileage vehicle (and that is very high) has a better chance of some maintenance issues - even if engine and tranny are rebuilt there are plenty of other systems that were not built to take that kind of use. That being said if you have mechanical skills and tools you might be able to repair as you go but my opinion is price and mileage are both too high. If you are serious about it have someone go over it for you. As I said before if they seller won't allow that then walk away. Remember only my opinion you make your own decision based on what you see and know.

Chech NADA or Kelly Blue Book for vehicle values:

NADA says it's worth about 1/2 what he's asking. Engine and trans rebuilt by who? There can be a big difference in the quality of work.

If there's not a valid warranty for both, then it's not a good deal. Also, if you plan to do a lot of travelling, a warranty from a local shop will do you no good if you break down 700 miles away.

I agree with you and have already checked all those value sites such as edmunds, kbb, autotrader, etc. and yes with the mileage. unfortunately it seems as if this guy is waaay overestimating its value. (and he is a former cop and was in the AF) i guess the only hope is to wait it out and hope this guy comes down on his price. remember its the original engine with 324k miles on it and its a rebuilt transfer case and transmission with a warrant that WILL cancel out cause he sold it to a private party.

leave him your phone number and a offer you think is fair.

a little used car tip,
repairing broken or non functional stuff on any vehicle does not make it worth more than book. he could have dumped 50k into it, but it's still only worth book. some people don't realize this, especially private party sellers. and you don't want to be a buyer that takes the bait

IMO to much money for that many miles.

Which is it original or rebuilt?   If it's the original you can bet on needing a rebuild in the not too distant future. Highway miles or not.

yeah its original emgine in it but rebuilt transfer case and rebuilt transmission

There are thousands of these for sale with 200,000 less miles on them and far less money too. Walk away and keep looking, you deserve better..
