well the questions have started my family think I have lost my mind and most people I know think the same thing .but I have told them this is a cheaper way to live then they ask about the dogs and I tell them they are going with me . then the question about eating staying clean I explained to them how it is done thanks to bob wells and his knowledge of van life then they tell me it is not safe I just tell them it is just as safe as living in my house  and easier to keep cleaned up . and I tell them I need a change and if I decide I am not happy doing this I can all ways move back into a house not .

If it makes you happy and you are comfortable doing it they should support you.

Nice looking group of pups there.

People fear what they don't understand or try to relate with the limited knowledge of the subject that they have on hand. They see homeless, cold and packed in barely making it by because it doesn't represent the stability they are use to. My whole family RV's in nicer rigs than mine but couldn't fathom moving in one full time with no base to come home too. I answered the where will you, how will you and whys, now my sister and her husband are selling there house and at least for a while moving into their trailer to be closer to the kids. They won't be homeless, oh no. They are just doing it while they look for a new place.

You know, that's actually kind of odd.  Living in a van could be considered a touch, uhm, eccentric; but pretty much everyone knows there are millions of retired folks full timing in fully equipped RVs.

Ah, now with retired folks, you get into another dynamic, "My RV is better than your RV" among many. It is so very "class" conscious, so never believe anything else. We will be retired folks, limited SS but "sufficient" for us, maybe not 90% of the others. I just try to stay on the down low about what we are doing. I don't believe in lying, but I'm getting creative.

My family, a brother and older son know better than to give me much advice. Now, if my husband's sister knew the intricate details, she might throw a fit. Once we were moving to NC and she forbid my husband to move there because of hurricanes. Yeah, her days of forbidding had long passed.

In reality, anything that could happen on the road could happen in one's hometown/cozy little house. In the last town, they were going to rob homes with the people present.

And, dogs love to travel. Mine are asleep most of the time being older, but are ready to go on any adventure. No matter how difficult the situation gets, they will still be pleased as punch. When we were younger and had the two kids, boy did we get lectured when we decided to full-time for a couple of years. Life is so short, I'm going to decided how to spend it!!!

it must be regional because where i am from it is not uncommon for people to live in travel trailers and rvs so there isnt much stigma over it
so everyone that has seen my little rv i'm rebuilding says"cool"

Guess we all need to follow our own dreams. Besides, you'll have all those three dog (or is it four?) nights now.

Well , I sure know who will be having the most fun !

Yeah. Round my neck of the woods living in a van is common place.

Oh they will go north every summer for 5 or 6 months but to completely let go of the house, that's homeless to them.

the cost of keeping a house is going up every year here .and I am not happy with owning a house if my van breaks it is cheaper to fix it

My family thinks the same, they have even contacted me to let me know that I have lost my mind. And no not in a fun, joking way.

The great irony is that I'm more financially stable than I've ever been and I'm happy, which is everything!

People will judge, criticize and worry about your aberrant lifestyle choices; love them anyway.

I am glad I am not the only one

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” --Frank Herbert,Dune

I was always the crazy (or dumb ass) one among all my family and (most of) my old friends!
(Not counting musicians)
Now I have new friends and not much family left , I've been very happy with my life and it only got better when I started just camping for a living.

Don't worry about other's ideas of what you should do.
What makes you happy is #1.
