Hi, my husband and I are in the planning stages of boondocking and living free. We are currently checking the options of vehicles, so many choices.....
We have limited funds to purchase anything new or fairly new. We own a mercury 1994 tracer wagon which we tried to figure a redesign in it. But We just kept coming up with the fact the car is just too small. We have also looked into conversion vans but my husband is really concerned with gas mileage. We thought about a mini-van but I think he wants to be more stealthy so we could park overnight in neightborhoods if that's our only option. Plus, he was thinking the mini-van would not be big enough for the 2 of us and everything else we would need to install. Anyway we are still looking and researching. We do have a 1976 pop-up camper but just like I mentioned before we are wanting the stealthiness of stopping and blending in. The forums have been really helpful.....Thank you everyone for all the info.

jamie & daryl beck

Hello!!!

I was in a minivan for a little bit, and I think it works really really well for 1 person, and is definitely capable of blending into pretty much everywhere. I agree for 2 people, it would be really tight.

I am in a ford E-350 extended cargo van now, so the 'house' part behind the 2 front seats, is 12 feet long and 6 feet wide, or 72 sq feet. It can definitely work for 2 people.

I wouldn't worry so much about 'stealth' I think any vehicle can blend in somewhere. Around a pop-up camper, if you do a lot of traveling , and have to put it up and down every single day, it could get really really old, really fast. I don't travel every day, but I know I would not want to do it every time I wanted to mosey down the road.

Another option (I have no personal experience with) is you both get a small mini van or car or something with super awesome gas mileage, then you both get your own space, and if it was 2 Prius or something at 50+ mpg, even cut in half @ 25 mpg(since you have to pay for gas on 2 vehicles), it's still better than what I get in my giant van @17.

I wish you lots and lots of successes in finding the right vehicle for you!

With love,
Tara
