Math and magic(same same) are very hard for me to grasp. If you can help, would be much appreciated.

2 vehicles.
Vehicle 1 gets 23 mpg.
Vehicle 2 gets 12 mpg.
What is the total mpg for both vehicles combined?

Hopefully that is a understandable question. Currently I just run both numbers thru calculator and then add them together like this.

23mpg ÷ 500mi x $2.50gallon gas = 1rst cost
12 ÷ 500 x $2.50 = 2cnd cost
1rst cost + 2cnd cost = gas cost(approx) for trip.

Thnx!

combined they get 17.5 mpg. Add the two together and divide by 2 and that's your avg mpg when combined.

However, when figuring out your total gas per trip with two vehicles you'll either have to do them seperate like you have been, or take the combined mpg and multiple your end number by 2, because you're running two vehicles. 500 miles /17.5 mpg = 28.57 gallons x 2.50 gallon= $71.42 x 2 =$142.85 because there are two vehicles.

Im not even sure what number youre looking for.

If youre looking for avg, do what ERLH said. If youre looking for each vehicles total, do what you said.

I believe I understand what wabbit is asking.

8.75 is the combined MPG. Average of both vehicles divided by two. That is the number you'll need for your calculations.

For instance, to go the 500 miles in the first post:

500 / 8.75 * 2.50 = $143

When I entered the numbers presented here I realized I mixed up the division part in my original post, lol. Like I mentioned before, magic is hard!

how do you drive 2 vehicles at once? I want to see that, from a safe distance of course. LOL highdesertranger

Its me and my confused roommate. We drive separate vehicles.

How are you getting 8.75? Both vehicle mpg is greater than that... The answer should be 17.5 average mpg between the two...

Just to stir the pot.....

Buy a small car dolly; hitch it to the larger vehicle (presumably the 12 mpg), and tow the smaller smaller 23 mpg vehicle. The larger will lose a couple of miles per gallon, probably, but it's still less than the grand total of driving two vehicles. Just a thought; it wouldn't be worth it if you're not going too far. And there's the stress on the tow vehicle.

It is 17.5 mpg average, but that's for both vehicles. So to get mpg total, you times that by 2 because the gas nozzle goes into 2 gas tanks.

The 23mpg one is a minivan, towbar might still be an option, but driving it prob would need some skill.

wabbit is asking for combined mpg, not average. The average is 17.5 which means that they combine to 8.75 (half of their average).
