Hi,

I found a used 12v mini fridge/freezer. It's a WAECO 1.7cu ft. similar to this one http://www.boatandrvaccessories.com/CR-1050UF.htm, except without the 110. It's says the power consumption is 40 Watts. I usually hear people talk of their compressor-type fridge power consumption in Amps.

Added note: I found an online conversion program ... and it comes out to 3.33 amps. And I found a chart that shows the average amps per hour to be between .83 - 1.33. Thats ok, right?

Also, does anyone know about the quality of the WAECO units?
Thanks for helping, Suanne

They are good quality. What is your mode of recharging your batteries?

Good to hear they are good quality. Thanks for saying. We will be checking it out tomorrow.

To start out, we'll be charging the house battery (in the fiberglass egg trailer) before we leave home (for weekend trips). If/when hubby wants to spend more time traveling, we'll probably go with a small generator to keep the battery charged.
Is your vehicle charging the trailer battery while driving? The small generator is a great idea. Just confirm it has 12volt charging.
Welcome...

A 20 dollar RV solenoid would solve that easily. Also. I saw this on the sister site:

http://cheapgreenrvliving.com/Product_Reviews.html

Personally, I wouldn't surround the fridge with Styrofoam, as it impedes airflow to the compressor (an equal fan-sized hole cutout would solve the issue, but on my fridge, there are air circulation holes all over. near the compressor. How do I know? Look at my Engel Fridge/Freezer. I notice when it's on, and inside the slide-out area, it tends to run hotter and longer. So, during the hot days, I slide it out for more air circulation. It runs less this way.

Suanne, We bought a Road Pro 175 inverter (at truck stop) that plugs into the cigarrette lighter socket. Then we plug a Sears 3 stage battery charger into that and charge the house battery (Diehard marine PM2)when driving or idling. Doesn't charge quite as fast as wall socket, but works well.

We picked up the little WAECO fridge/freezer today. It's a perfect size for our little trailer.

jbandhilda -- Because our hitch plug is not set up to charge the battery, I hadn't thought of using the 12v plug in the car. I could probably string a wire out the trunk. Doable I think. Thanks for the idea.

AJ -- I was thinking of also putting insulation around the fridge on the top, sides, bottom and on the back below the compressor. It's a front-open built-in, not a top-open like your set up (which is very cool btw). Our trailer already has a vent opening for the compressor. I'm hoping that will be enough.

Suanne
