Yes we know that everyone wants to get paid for their time.  It seems to of course be the American way to squeeze profit streams out of everything; else why is it worth it to the community.

Well there are many things that can be of benefit to a community in the context of festivals.  Ideally you could want to be paid, by working for a vendor.  But if you cant do that, then being a volunteer could give you the ability to participate.

Here are some indexing web sites for interesting hobbies that have festivals.  Go for it, to see if you can volunteer, and then have some fun.

Great stuff, bud. What kind of volunteer work have you contributed to these festivals so far?

Not a festival, but when we got into Quartzsite, the thrift shop which benefits aN Animal refuge was short handed. Margie volunteered to stand in part time for a couple weeks.

I've volunteered with organic farms as part of the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) program. Great way to eat great food, live a simpler lifestyle, meet some great people, and stretch your budget.

Another way to volunteer is through local county or senior/elder care groups. Many seniors need a bit of help with house cleaning chores, and would greatly appreciate it. Whether it's light house keeping, --many people need a little more than that--or shopping, taking to appointments, etc. Maybe you could advertise through the senior centers or elder organizations to do occasional or seasonal chores for seniors, maybe for a small fee. Things like washing windows, moving and cleaning under heavy furniture, cleaning bathroom, re-arranging a room.

I'm gathering signature for a petition for ballot. I like exercising my First Amendment Rights and making a change in government. I'm not into politics, but I still feel obligated to do my civic duty. I find this is an emotionally and intellectually easy way to make a difference without getting into political spin.

I've done other, more mundane things, too, like shovel the neighbor's sidewalk during the winter because he got too old to do it. Things like that still make a big difference IMO.
