Hi folks. I've made a blog post detailing some methods of finding wonderful free places to camp.

Very nice.  I looked at it briefly and will study more closely this weekend.

There's so much detail in here that I'm only willing to make it in a place where I have full and easy control over the creation and formatting...

Preach, brother!  I've started putting complex material on my blog or wiki for that exact reason.

DATA WARNING -- it contains 46 images, so if your data is limited or really slow, wait to look at this until you're on some free WIFI.

Compression proxy to the rescue!  The first number in these ziproxy log entries is the original image; the second number is the processed/compressed image:

Really knocks down bandwidth use where my 3G connection can handle it.  Folks using Opera's or Chrom*'s data saver features would see similar reductions in size.

Then zoom in until you see the land ownership layers pop up.

I like the state by state topographic atlases, with a bit of practice I can usually find good spots. Also, more private than the online options. I use judgment on which I post to Freecampsites.

DLTooley, what topo atlases are you using?  

I generally use the USGS 1:250,000 maps to scope an area, along with Delorme and Benchmark (where available) but neither of those give much topo detail.  I then use USGS 1:24,000 if I need more resolution.

I think that error message means there was not a good connection between arcgis.com and wildfire.cr.usgs.gov. It may work for you at another time.

I tried both of the web pages and both maps were loading, although with some delays.

You can get coordinates off of the arcgis maps if you click the top bar: Measure, then click on the box with the crosshairs.
