Tulsa

So has anybody lived in or traveled through Tulsa, OK, and have any impressions to share?

(I'm leaving the question vague on purpose; I'd be interested in whatever strikes you as worth saying.)

We spent four days visiting Tulsa as part of a trip along Route 66 and enjoyed it immensely. Lots of old neon signs and Art Deco buildings. The city was built on oil money and the property of two oil barons have amazing art museums. The Woody Guthrie museum and Jewish art and history museum are good too. Two disturbing events in the city's history are almost ignored - the destruction of Greenwood, a thriving black neighborhood, by a white mob in 1921 and the loss of most of the Creek tribal land after the Civil War and the Curtis Act in 1898 that broke the existing land into allotments. Two small parks have sculptures and interpretive signs.

The city is not RV friendly - narrow streets and no parking at most Walmarts. We stayed south of the city at the River Spirit Casino. You can access a 10-mile-long paved trail from the casino lot that goes into the city.

I lived just across the border in NW AR for years. Try that area - it's only about 90 miles East and it's a much prettier area in the Tri State Corner region there (OK, AR, MO). Fayetteville AR is a great town with lots to do and the U of A - the major university for the state - my Alma Mater - is located there so there's a lot of energy and activity there.

Tulsa really isn't very much fun... Been there many times but never got too enthused about it...
