OP only said there is no check engine light. OP has not checked the codes. But I do agree the computer must match the engine. As well as all the sensors and vacuum lines be connected.

Things appear to be working. :) I replaced the fuel filter and added a can of fuel injector cleaner to ten gallons of fresh gas. I got it on the interstate up to 70mph. I drove it for an hour, combining city streets and interstate. No major issues. Twice the engine surged a few times at red lights but settled into idle. I think it is now back to it's previous performance.

ok now we are getting somewhere. I thought it sounded like fuel starvation. I recommend the fuel filter to be changed once a year, although it should last longer it's cheap insurance. another tip is to cut your old filter open and make sure it's not full of rust or other contaminants. is the trans still slipping when cold? make sure you check your temp gauge with your thermometer, just so you know it's working like it should. highdesertranger

180 degree thermostats used to be standard in all cars.

The manufacturers went to 195 degree thermostats when it dawned on them that it was a quick and cheap way to meet new emission standards. The hotter an engine is, the less pollution it puts out.

On older engine designs, you can usually still find the old 180 stats. But be aware that if you have to go in for annual emissions testing, you will probably not pass anymore.

And if you have a newer engine design, you are sol. They don't even make cooler stats for them.

John
