In my prior life, I owned a small trailer rental company providing living accommodations for oilfield drilling rig sites. I had a dozen or so trailers all of which I retro-fitted with slide out generators. I've not seen a current model trailer with that feature. Has anyone added a permanent onboard generator to a trailer? I was running 2KW and 3KW Onan units with conversion kits for propane. We didn't hard wire the electric side but simply attached the shore power plug directly into the generator mounted outlet.

I want a unit large enough to power a 13.5 AC system with battery start.

Thoughts?

To get the ac cranked up you would need a 3000 or larger genny. Honda makes them with battery start, I have a 3000i but it is not equipped with a starter. There are few remote start options available also. There are so many options out there now it would be hard to choose, and most can be converted to propane if you want. Plumbing it to exhaust to the outside and get enough air to keep cool would be an issue, but if you have done it before then no problems.

Just saw your new post. A Onan 2800 Microlite will run a 13,500. Great genny's.

Yup, they are fine pieces of equipment...

Features:

Microprocessor control with diagnostics and lightweight, compact design.
Gasoline or LP fueled.
Quietest generator sets of their size.
Easy maintenance with single-side service.
Completely enclosed with muffler, quick and easy to install.
3-year limited warranty.
Low fuel consumption.

"2.5kW QG RV generator set will start and run one 13500 Btu high efficiency air conditioner (15.5 amps or less) plus 600 watt base load with an additional 300 watts of power available".

Robin Subaru (Fuji) EX21, supposed to be a quality motor, good longevity.

Guess they'll downgrade to Honda since Subaru's getting out of the biz?

Northwood Travel trailers offer Onan 2.5 LP generators as an option. Here's a link to one of their models. Scroll down and it will show a picture of the Onan and it's also listed in the available options list on the right hand side.

Sounds like you already have your trailer, but nice to see some manufacturers finally offering it as an option. They offer solar packages too.

I've seen a few trailers at the race track (cargo/racing) with slide out gennys. Access doors are a common option, adding a sliding shelf to hold a 3k size generator could be an easy DIY project, or added by manufacturer on a custom built trailer.

If all functionality and maintenance are available from the one facing side, then what added value does the sliding mechanism offer?

Cooling and exhaust. Regular generators are not designed to be enclosed, it's a good way to wake up dead. It's (to me) dangerous to use one that close to the unit.

I love Northwood, but even their lightest trailer is too much for my truck.
