Am 52 now. Have a chance to take a dirt cheap retirement at age 56 for maybe $30,000 a year. I have no dependents. My girlfriend owned a house and was working 8-4 job on $30k a year last year. My mom lives on SS for $20k a year. My son in his early 20 lives on $20k a year. --- eventually I will get $20k SS myself.

Personally I don't need to work, but I can take camp host paid jobs. Or I can just transfer around.

I'd jump at that in a heartbeat!! You can live extremely well in a van on $30 K a year!!! :)

I retired at 51 on less than $15K a year and have never even slightly regretted it!! I had to take a job as a campground host and draw unemployment to supplement it, but I loved those jobs! In a few years I'll draw SS and then money will never be a problem again.

Bob. - I am shocked that people are so extravagant and opulent to need $100k a year to live. Makes me want to be a hermit away from poor choice Richie rich folks. But that's my opinion.

Thirty-K is dirt cheap?

Anm - I know. It's a lot for many. I agree.

Gsfish - can't do that on iPhone app.

On my 70th birthday, I started writing my first novel. On my 72nd next month, I hope to have my 3rd one up on Amazon. (Not making a lot on them, but will do more promotion soon.)

As for how much money it takes to live on, geez, I've always been near the lower end of the scale!

I'm not getting on you about it, I know that we are raised to do the nine to five bit, work until you're 65 or older, and then retire and live off your retirement. Can you guarantee what your health will be at 65? I know what I would do, take an early retirement and enjoy it while I can.

But it also depends on what your expectations are, maybe if you're going to be getting a motor home, you might want to hang in there a bit longer. I've got a van, a rather small van, and it'll do for me. I can't remember if you said gf is going with you? That may make a difference, has she gone camping for an extended time? What are her expectations?

I agree with Lovemy dogs, Amazon's KDP is a simple way to get into self-publishing, anyone can do it, you don't have to have been an English major in high school, just write what you know, and make it interesting.

Well I'm a few days into my 71st year, I don't feel much different, and nothing major has fallen off. Getting old pisses me off, it's just this carcass that's old, not really me. Anyone sees me, they see an old git, they don't see me, that's my complaint...

I did get falling down drunk, but luckily I couldn't remember the falling down part. Somehow I got in my bed, I don't remember going to bed, and woke up the next morning (alone damn it!) with just a slight hangover. Had a glass of water and 2 ibuprofen and slept for another couple hours and then got up feeling okay.

The older I get, the more I hate birthdays, bah humbug...

Know how you feel about getting old, Andrew.

I've got an 18 year olds enthusiasm with seven decades of experience ... trapped in a 74 year old body. I know how to do so much and still have all the desires, and yet none of the health, strength, and stamina to act on it.

Still, given the alternative, I just keep on keeping on.
