I am a new comer to vandwelling, so there's a lot I don't know. I have a 5 gallon water jug that I am going to fill up. Should I put anything into it to keep if drinkable? Like one of those iodine pills? If it sits in my van in the hot sun for any length of time it's liable to go off, any suggestions?

You want to shade it so it isn't in direct sunlight. If you do that no need for any treatment.

I clean mine out twice a year with bleach to kill anything that may try to grow in it. I fill them full of water, pour in some bleach and let them sit overnight. Dump it and rinse the next day and it's good as new.

The white & clear jugs definitely need to be in shade algae will grow in them in direct sun. I prefer opaque jugs, the jugs I have now are blue no light gets through.

Okay, thanks Bob and Spirituallifetime.

My container is also blue, though I don't think it's as dark as yours sounds Spirituallifetime. In any case, it will be protected from exposure to sunlight, and I'll follow your regime on cleaning it Bob.

The cleaning is very important. Did I say cleaning the container is important?
Most, but not all, potable water sources are chlorinated at about 2 parts per million. That is to keep the water fresh during storage. If you go on Clorox web site you can learn about chlorinating water for your safety if you are using questionable sources.
