Hi all - After the death defying trip back from Dallas, the 2006 GMC G2500 Extended Hi Top Savana is now SAFELY mobile!! MY friend and mechanic George, (also 30 yr. mgr. of NAPA) helped me on my van today. We had to put in a new pittman arm & part above it that it attaches to, Idler arm, and Steering Gearbox. total of parts not including the deposit on the gearbox, $450. George changed all those parts out while I changed out the plugs and wires. Doing the front plugs on each side was easier taking off the tires to reach them. Since we had the tires off, we went ahead and inspected the brakes and components all around that area, looking good.

It has 3 matching rims and tires, and one oddball. We lowered the spare tire, and it had a steel rim on it and the same type of tire as the 3 like tires on the van. Upon further investigation, it is a rim off a Ford van, and it's a 17", so that tire is not going back under. The tire lowering mechanism was really dirty, and didn't work smoothly. So we took it off and are going to clean it back up to a usable state or replace it.

I replaced the plain jane plugs and stock wires with AC Delco Platinum plugs and NAPA Belden premium wires. It runs MUCH better now!!!
Here are a few pics, she's still rough but coming along.

Congrats on a great looking platform...looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

Thanks for the comments. As soon as I get the preliminary repairs done, I'll start building it out. I've read many posts here about the ragged condition these work & fleet vehicles can be when you first get them. This one is no exception, but I think it will turn out OK.

The really bad front end parts have been replaced, I'm hoping the Alignment people don't find anything else needing replaced. I've told them if anything is showing real signs of wear, I want it replaced, I don't want a failure a thousand miles down the road.

Maybe someone will chime in on the options of solar & fantastic fans on the hi top. Flexible glue downs or gutter racks and extensions with rigid panels. The hi top is about 9 feet off the ground now. Since the inside of the hi top is already trimmed out with panels, I'm guessing there is wood behind them.
