I have been on a path to get back to baking, but being a full time boon-docker baking is not an easy solve... I have researched oven from backpacking to in camp ovens... There more than a few to choose from but I am pulling the trigger on the Coleman stove top oven... The oven has been around for many many years and has not changed in any way, which only means they can't design and make it any better... This oven folds down for space saving and the reviews are outstanding... i am looking forward to expanding into baking...

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Coleman174-Camping-Oven/745746.uts?WTz_l=Header;Search-All+Products

Hi SoulRaven,

If you haven't bought it yet, you might look at this one:
St. Paul mercantile oven

Only my opinion, but I've owned the Coleman oven for many years, and it's OK and will do it's job, and is cheaper than the good one. But there are a lot of gaps because it is a folding oven, and it is difficult to get a good solid stable heat. JMO, but look at this one if you have the time.

Good luck with whichever you choose. There are some folks on this site with some excellent recipes!

Thanks for the heads up on this oven, but the deal killer is it does not fold up... Space is at a premium and these sentence's where the deal killer for me...

"The Butterfly oven is no ordinary camping oven. It is approximately a 13" cube. It is very sturdy and does not fold up."

I also am getting the Coleman. I can't eat grains so I make my own bread and crackers out of flax seed and almond flour. I am so glad Coleman has this.

I have this oven and I will tell you it is made for wood stove camping, an electric stove top will not get hot enough to make this work, an open flame stove top will though, but you will lose a lot of propane. I then purchase this little stove:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013LLSZG/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

it's pricey but safer than the camp oven

I also have a solar oven, yup they take up space but I put all my cooking stuff inside, and they work great for baking.

SoulRaven,

I hear you on the space issue. I'm enough of a baking nut (not necessarily in that order) to want the abilities that come with regular temps. But I've seen your photo with the van in back, and I can see that space would be the issue for you. The Coleman has worked for me, but I've turned the air blue a few times!

So...anyone interested...I am bringing my Coleman folding oven to the RTR where it will go on the take-it tarp....
Bri
