Hello,
I am new here and thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself.
I have been watching Bob's YouTube channel with great interest and thought I would stop by the forums here.
I have been a salary slave since 1994. My plan is to break free from this prison in the Spring of 2018. Why wait you ask? Well, my daughter that is 21 years old now, is going to school and living in Japan. It is costing me a small fortune, so I have to continue being a slave at least until she is finished, which is Spring of 2018.
That will also give us enough time to sell our house, sell our belongings, and prepare for freedom.
My wife and I are not 100% sure what we are going to do this just yet. We might become nomads, or alternatively, we might buy a tiny house or single wide and use that as a home base, then travel for extended periods from there in a van or small RV and have the home base to return to. Essentially being half time nomads.
Either way, being 100% debt free and not working are the main priorities. Also, migrating with the weather seems very appealing to us. We now live in beautiful New Hampshire, where the weather is wicked cold and snowy in winter. The older I get, the more I hate both the cold as well as the long dark nights. The farther north you go, the more extreme the day/night cycles are. And up here right now it is dark for nearly 15 hours a day with only 9 hours of light.
If we sell our house and our belongings, we should have enough money to pay cash for a single wide, tiny house or a nice RV. Or a combination of single wide and a van.
I think it is doable, as we have been diligently making mortgage payments and diligently investing for more than 20 years, we are both fully vested in pensions and social security, and have a decent amount in retirement accounts.
The biggest factor is fear of the unknown, and letting go of the false sense of security that you get as a brainwashed wage slave. And also wondering about medical care as we get older it will become more and more important. I am 51 and my wife is 58.
Anyway, I look forward to reading and learning as much as I can here and I greatly appreciate the wisdom from experience that you all share here. Maybe come spring of 2018, I can meet up with some of you in some far away and warm place (like Arizona).
