I'll be on the road 2 to 3 weeks at a time. My first thought was to just get a gigantic/unlimited data plan and a (tethered) mobile device to do double duty as my home Internet connectivity, but as an online worker who requires stability and speed, that sounds like an unsatisfactory proposition. So now I'm leaning toward a modest-but-usable home Internet plan coupled with a modest-but-usable mobile data plan (which I would use only when there's no free Wi-Fi in the area). Would love to spend less than $100 a month for whole thing.

Currently using Verizon as my cell phone provider (still shopping for a smartphone), and the extensive coverage area offered by this provider makes me want to stay with them for traveling. I'm used to maximum speeds of around 50-80 down/5-11 up from my current Grande home service, but willing to compromise a bit.

Any recommendations that might fit the bill?

Even with unlimited data on three of the four providers as well as unlimited streaming on the fourth all for $56 a month, it is rare that I would see speeds like that out in the boonies far away from town. I have yet to be unable to stream from any location I have been in but for this ability a single provider would never do as even Verizon has failed me at least once. I can say my AT&T Mobley has been a wonderful thing with unlimited data for $20 a month. I use it often along with the Verizon 3G and Sprint LTE devices. T-Mobile has been a disappointment despite their advertising as often there is no signal at all when not near a town.

I can say I turned off the home internet provider long before I left for my adventure on the road. It provided great speed at times but often was so congested that I could barely load a page.

I have Cricket Wireless unlimited for $65 a month for my phone. I plan to add the Mobley plan on AT&T. That will give me unlimited on my laptop. This would work well for anyone, check AT&T maps for service coverage areas. The total would be $105 a month as the mobley cost goes to $40 next month.

I use my Mobley and the Verizon $5/mo plan I bought from eBay. Still not blazing speeds all the time in my small tourist town, but works well other places. Tower congestion is my issue, not coverage.
