p.s. mechanic gave me a receipt for the starter, told me to take a picture of it because the receipts fade, email it to myself and keep it as it has a lifetime warranty. On the starter itself, not the labor. I thought that was so good of him to do.

Pamerica, that's great to hear! It sounds like they took good care of you and $150 is a totally decent price.

Yes good guys. Most of us are. Divine intervention is common with old trucks. Don't forget AAA gave them something.

Tonight he changed all the negative wires and something else in there, the tow guy did the ground cable (the ground something) and mechanic got me a new starter from parts store, got right to work, fixed it all tonight and charged only $150.

Got here late, but I was thinking ground strap to the vehicle + the other loose, corroded, or worn parts.  That would explain the lack of headlights, which was the most interesting part of the problem.

Well, this actually turned into the disaster that keeps on giving. Here it is October 10th and I am stuck in a parking lot in Pennsylvania for a week this time.  Good thing it's my friend's parking lot. Not mentioning yet the three days in a parking lot in Virginia fighting off AAA.

Don't know if I should explain this here, start a new thread or over at the other one I started. I can certainly use some advice on what to do with my van and this is a real caveat for newbies or anyone else.
