It seems that a typical thickness is around 1 - 1 1/2 inches. Just wondering if that's what everyone is seeing.  Because I have a space to store panels when not in use that is 2 inches thick.

Just the panels not with mounting brackets.

Semi-flex type are thinner than that, even with aluminum backing sheet / plate.

Rigid glass type framing dimensions should be listed in the specs
 
There's the frame, and the circuit box on the back. The specs should have the frame, and the circuit box should be flush with the frame. You'll also have some length of wire coming off. A longer wire could be a little bit of a hassle.

Measure twice, cut once, as they say.
