The south west doesn't sound like it's big on fishing or is it. I'm wondering if that is gear I should leave here.

actually the Colorado River has some monster cats, and bass is always a good bet. highdesertranger

I just put 40 striped bass in the cooler on ice to clean in the morning. Lake Powell has no limits on them or walleye, best fishery I have ever fished. Large and Small mouth Bass, Catfish, Blue Gill, Crappie, Sunfish and even some Pike on the north end. Fish Lake has Trout and Perch. Lake Powell is 184 miles long in southern Utah and Northern Arizona. Weather is good spring and fall, HOT in summer and cold about 8 weeks in the winter. Perfect this year lower 50's last night and upper 60's today.

It's been quite a while since I was down to Powell. Seems to me I had to buy two fishing license that trip. I also remember the marina was Bullfrog too.

If you don't take your rod, I will guarantee that before long you will be looking at some great looking stretch of water and kicking yourself... ;)

What's everyone's favorite gear ?   I'm into fly fishing, but also carry a spin cast outfit too.  I had a big cardboard tube in my old van (8" ID)  with a piece of board down through the middle to make two compartments in it. This was a typical Van without a raised top.   So I mounted the tube at the left side roof line inside the Van to carry
tent poles for the awning and fishing rods in the other compartment.  It was out of the way there and provided
the storage I needed for those things.  It wasn't heavy either.  The front end of the tube was sealed with a circle of 1/4" plywood tacked in place.

It served me well.

I'll leave the ultra light and fly gear here, too much casting for my arm right now. I'll keep a ugly stick and a shore casting pole, both with open faced reels. The stick can handle most anything and the shore caster can drop the smallest rapala in the middle of a lake. I have a PVC tube for them too.

Hence the handle. You can get either a Utah or Arizona license and fish in either state with an additional stamp from the other state. Utah's can be bought over the phone. I followed the Colorado River last year with thoughts of fishing so I have an Arizona license with a Utah stamp. I didn't fish California as rules and license were too much and the bugs get worse as you go south it seems to me and I don't like bugs!

if you are on the water you can use a license from either state. if you are on the shore you need a license from the state you are in. highdesertranger

That's good to know since I won't have room for the inflatable boat. I haven't even aired it up in a few decades.

Interesting. If you keep the fish and go back to land, im guessing you'd need that states tag?

yes, as soon as you step foot on land with fish you caught on the water you need a license for the state you are standing on. highdesertranger
