Hi all
First question = how do you post pics on here? I click on 'insert image' and it wants a URL address. ????
Anyway, I'm slowly coming along on getting my 1995 Ford E150 road worthy. The asking price was $2000 but a friend I took widdled it down to $1450 as there was work needed to be done. We have since replaced the brake lines and brakes, new radiator and battery, and a few hoses. Fortunately the belts all look fine. And, I'm still under (just) that $2000 mark. Is there anything else anyone can advise that I should check out?

I have pretty much decided to take out the bench seat/bed in the back. When it's laid out it has 3 sections and seems to take up a lot of room for a bed that I don't really need that wide. I have been scoping out the pics of built-in beds and seriously thinking going that route for the size I want. Does anyone know if I can cut down one of those 'memory foam' mattress/pads to the size I need without compromising it? I was thinking of getting a 4 inch one.

While the repairs have been going on, I went through the tubs of my stuff removed from my house that I rented, sorting between stuff for the van and stuff to keep in storage. Fortunately it is only a few tubs, no furniture. The other day I bought some of those plastic drawer things to put into the van and now have them filled up in the guest room at my daughters where I am staying till I can hit the road. Now everything is ready to load into the van when it's ready. We laughed that I'm essentially living out of my van, just in her room.

My next question is about security. I'm a lone woman, 62 yrs young. I am not one to really worry about it but being out there all alone has my family a bit nervous. Right now my 'security' is a can of wasp spray to keep by my bed to 'shoot' any intruders. Any suggestions?

Internet access is a big thing for me. I checked with ATT (where I get my cell phone) and their air cards run about $60 a month. Does anyone know of a less expensive way?

Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to start taking short trips around Indiana to get the feel of it. I'm so excited!! Can't wait to meet some of you out there!! Thanks for all your help!!!

Kadi

One thing I try to get people that want a little non-lethal protection to get is one or more of those small stadium/signal horns. If you've ever been close to one when it was set off, you know how they can make you want to be somewhere else at that moment. You can get them in a size that will fit in a coat pocket or hang them on a string around your neck.

Hey Kadi

to post pics on here;

find the picture you want online - if its one of your own pictures you will have to upload it online somewhere. Try: www..photobucket.com - (there are others)

right click on the picture you want to post

click/choose "Copy Image Location" - you won't see anything happen, just know you've copied it.

next go to the forum reply screen - as follows;

left click on the picture shown by arrow

next you'll see this - right click on area shown by arrow - click/choose "Paste"

Next you should see the link entered (see below pic) this is the previously copied picture (ie, when you chose: copy image location - from above step) .... click OK, shown by arrow

next you should see the picture on your screen, like below. Congrats on the van!!! I too am going through the "figure it out" phase.
Not far from ya, I'm in Kentucky.
Have fun with the build.
DanC

Congratulations on your progress!

Yes, you can cut memory foam mattresses to the correct size.

 Another way to insert pictures is to go to the bottom of the post where it says " manage attachments" and load the picture from your computer. It'll be a thumbnail that can be clicked on to enlarge it.

The best thing to cut memory foam with is one of those electric carving knives, they go through foam like butter! I had to shorten my 8" thick mattress by about 6" and used this method. Check out my bed frame, it doesn't require many tools to build/comes apart/uses space MUCH better than the benches that come in these vans: https://vanlivingforum.com/post/94-Ford-E150-conversion-van-road-tripgetaway-vehicle-6229225

Ha! Went to photobucket and "copied" the pic and pasted it here. I really have to get more computer savvy! LOL

I guess there's a number of ways to do it then!

Nice Ride!

@ Brianpeck - I like the simpleness of the bed frame you built.... can I ask how much total that it cost you to do it?

Brianpeck = I like your bed idea also and am interested in the price. I'm guessing pipe is cheaper than wood, and a lot less heavy? I also liked all the open space under it.
it Thank you for bringing my attention to it!

The pipe is decently heavy as I went for thick-walled to make sure it'd be strong and not saggy. The beauty of it all is that it breaks down so the smaller sections of pipe are easy to move, but once it's assembled it's probably heavy enough to be awkward for one person to move. I'm not sure on an exact total price because I had the pipe connections gifted to me, and those can be pretty expensive brand new. I paid $40ish for the pipe and the wood slats were recycled from a futon frame my family had. The open space underneath the bed is priceless!

Love the pipe bed idea. I'm investigating doing this with PVC piping. In small sections, its pretty strong.
