Silverado Truck Problem

<P><B>Vehicle:&nbsp; 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD about 123000 miles, very well cared for.</B><BR><B>Problem:&nbsp; Last night, no load on the truck, seat chime would not stop.&nbsp; </B><BR><B>I came to a stop sign and as I was slowing to a stop, chime goes off followed by engine shutting off.&nbsp;</B><BR><B>&nbsp;This chime quitting happened each time I came to a stop sign wheather the engine cut out or not.</B><BR><B>Engine shut off 3 out of 5 times.</B><b>No lock up of steering etc because I was always rolling to a stop.</b><BR><B>Immediate start after cutting out.</B><BR><B>&nbsp;No engine hesitation, absolutely no dummy lights were on, no ck engine light-nothing.</B><BR><B>This happened to my son about a month ago but no chime sounded.</B><BR><B></B>&nbsp;<BR><B>I'm going to be heading out to visit my daughter for a few days, in my little old Grand Am, I will have computor access later this evening.&nbsp; I need some ammo before I take the truck in somewhere. It could be the Mass Air Flow Sensor, when they go bad on the older Chev/GMC vehicles, they will shut the engine down when you slow down or come to a stop, it is sometimes a&nbsp;sporadic event and sometimes it is continual. I have replaced two of them on General Motors vehicles that I have owned, and on stuff for other people, take it to autozone or advance auto ask them to run a scan sometimes it will show up even without a check engine light coming on.&nbsp;<div>I am only giving you this info as a ref point, it could be other things, fuel pump getting ready to go out, fuel filter is becoming plugged up, even an alternator problem, which happened to my Dads 2000 GMC truck.&nbsp;</div><div>Good luck</div>

<P>I've had the MASF difficulties on GM products&nbsp;as well, but this doesn't seem to generate the same symptons - "no engine hesitation".<BR><BR>I'd think a fuel/air problem would initiate some type of engine hesitation or sputtering before the engine quit.<BR><BR>A sudden no warning stop sounds like a stoppage of electricity to the engine: and not to ust one cyclinder.&nbsp; If the engine starts right back up again, I would hesitate to call it a battery or alternator problem: either would leave the battery incapable of restarting the engine, I'd think.<BR><BR>My first suspicion, if it's not in the car's computer itself, is the computer's receiving a signal that makes it stop sending current to the engine. A bad sensor? Possibly just a loose connection somewhere, but I wouldn't place my hopes in that. <BR><BR>Does it only occur after the engines at running temperature?<BR><BR>Just noticed that no dashboard lights, as well. I'd guess that means no power to the entire system, not just to the engine. Power problem to the ignition system? The ignition switch? A good possibilty.&nbsp;That could make the engine stop suddenly, and possibly stop power to the dash, depending on how it's wired.&nbsp;Is the seat belt warning system run through the ignition system? I don't know.</P><P><BR>DUH. Of course it's wired through the ignition system... *smacks forehead*<BR><BR>&nbsp;<BR>Have them check the wiring (running current through)&nbsp;from the battery through the ignition system, once the vehicle has stalled. The more I think about it, a bad ignition switch could have the effect of 'turning the car off'.&nbsp; </P><P>I'm meeting a mechanic friend for lunch in&nbsp;a couple of hours. I'll check with him.<BR><BR>Just some semi-educated guesses.<BR><BR><BR><BR></P>

Have the crankshaft sensor checked, (common failure) also check the fuel pump pressure while driving, also a common problem, might be as simple as a plugged fuel filter, or a bad fuel pump that is in the fuel tank.. Good luck<br><br>Putz<br><br>

&lt;P&gt;Spoke to Don - he just retired having owned his own business for 32 years.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;BR&gt;He didn't have a ready answer, based on the information at hand. He advised it could be the wire into the coil is loose: a problem he's come across on ocassions that gave the same result. A bump or something would break the connection long enough for the lack of current to stop the engine. Dashboard lights wold still functio.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;His first thought was a computer problem, but he suggested checking the electrical connections. He acknowledged it might be the ignition, but wasnt as confident as I was that's the difficulty.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;He still works on cars in a building behind his house, but he lives between Oxford and Hamilton, and is probably too far to make it worth your while. He's very good, and a lot less expensive than the dealership or large shops.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Let us know what the problem turns out to be. I'd love to lord it over him on the off chance I'm right *wink*&lt;br&gt;&lt;BR&gt; &lt;br&gt;

<P>S-I', less than 45 min from&nbsp;Oxford/Hamilton.&nbsp; I seem to have a cloud over me. I'm still home trying to deal with an electrical fire that put itself out a few hours ago.&nbsp; Awaiting Dayton&nbsp;Power and Leach and an electrician. One my meter is pulled, no electric to the rest of the house.&nbsp;</P>

One that new should have OBD2, see if you can get any diagnostic code from it.&nbsp; I have heard some auto-parts stores will loan you the code reader, or you can buy one for $20-$50.<br><br><br>

<p style="margin: 0px;">Thanks&nbsp; for the advice. I have not been able to deal with this problem yet. I seem to be up to my tail in alligators.&nbsp; The house fire, though it put itself out and seemed to have caused little damage, well it was more than I realized. About 3000.00 for the electrician, no ins for this. I have been going from friend to family to spend the nights.
