I think you covered it in previous posts but I can't recall. Do you ever do the metal detector thing on the beaches?

Found these 2 items this morning. The shell is an Atlantic Partridge Tun and the thing to the right?

Can you say O-Pur-Q-Lum?https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operculum_(gastropod)

An example of the operculum of an alive Lightning Whelk; I took this picture several years back.
The operculum I found today is from a Horse Conch.

I like seeing the shells. I was wondering what has been your weirdest beach find...... ? I love beach combing. I found an IV bottle and a few buoys and once an old saky bottle with lots of barnacles on it. found a tiny toy boot with a message for the finder to report where it was found. Found a really nice kite once though not ON the beach but in a tree beside it. Tons of plastic sand toys. Lots of old Christmas trees, those are fun to play with. Found a door once, not sure how that happened but it was a nice house door, doorknob and all after a storm. I am hoping to get back to beach combing as soon as things settle down again.

Weirdest beach find? Hmmm that’s a good one. I’ve found/encountered soo many weird and or unexpected things; either on the beach itself or while I’m wading/snorkeling/kayaking.

I gotta give that some thought as I’ve never really thought about ranking them. So much interesting things & experiences almost daily while exploring the beach scene.

🤷🏻‍♂️
lost at sea jonny

I’m thinking “weirdest”……..
Hmmm, post #118 of this thread I describe the octopus vacating, across my fingers & hand, from a Queen Conch shell I had just retrieved from the reef bottom.
Who the hell expects an octopus 🐙 fer gawdz sake to suddenly explode out of a seashell ur holding and fall to the water and dart away at warp speed?

That was pretty weird but it just happened a month ago so maybe I’m exhibiting abit of recency bias…….
🤷🏻‍♂️😎
bch bum jon the van man vagabon 🤙

Well I think I would have screeched and jumped at that too. I have had hermit crabs climb out of shells but nothing that fun.
Memorable having pinchers come at you while picking up a shell on the beach isn’t it! Lol!!!

Found another very nice Queen Conch with the big flare on it. This makes No. 5.
Also found a West Indies Top Shell 🐚, below

Still having too much enjoyment searching the reefs & seagrass flats for interesting things.

I really appreciate your enthusiasm and enjoyment looking for shells and other interesting things. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy it vicariously.

Queen Conchs I’ve kept; a 7th I gave away as a gift. Cupl sea biscuits upper left; Milk Conch lower rite.
Yes; they need to be cleaned yet and a couple of them I might polish. Dohno yet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I find numerous sea biscuits but I have enough and I have found literally hundreds of Queen Conchs that are alive & doing fine. All sizes: from 3” to almost a foot with great flares. Some certainly worth photographing but I don’t bring my fone when exploring.

The 2 pix below I took from the internet to show how interesting & beautiful Queen Conchs are when alive.

Check out this really kool fossil I discovered in this limestone coral rock. It’s about 3.5” by 2.5”.

When I returned to the van and began the internet search to find out about the ancient critter I had found; man; waz I in for a “what wow” moment!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthopleura_granulata
Apparently it’s called a fuzzy chiton and it is not a fossil at all but very much alive and well feeding on stuff on the rock.

whoda thunk. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Somewhere there's an octopus forum and that octopus is posting about you ...
They like really tight places, sometimes they live in beer bottles ...
And they can do this:

So jealous jonny boi I want to see an octopus!
