Another option, is to just use public libraries during the day for work. They almost always (99% of the time in my experience) have nice free wifi, plus they have power, etc. Librarians are generally friendly and they have books! Obviously that only works when you are in town. But it's a great way to handle the big data transfers and then use your normal cell phone plan(s) when out of town, etc. If you want to watch TV/etc, Amazon Prime Video now allows for downloading video and watching it offline in their mobile apps. The annoying part, it will only play the file if you are in airplane mode (i.e. not connected to the Internet), otherwise it will stream the video -- even if you have already downloaded it. You can generally download a movie or two or a full season of TV at a time (assuming you have the free space).

A Verizon unlimited plan(grandfathered) is about $125/month after taxes, etc. so it's not exactly the cheapest way to get Internet, but it sure is pretty nice to have... if you can afford the monthly fees!
