Hi have dreamt of converting a school bus, a step van or an old bus for years . Still saving and dreaming but your site is an inspiration .

Saving up "for years," and you still don't have enough to at least get a start? I think, perhaps, that you'd better rethink your conversion ambitions or you savings schedule or your lifestyle. If you have been saving for years and still can't get a foothold on your dream, you may need to adjust your dream.

I'm amazed by how many school bus conversion videos there are up on Youtube. Just a couple years ago I would never have even conceived of it (and tiny homes too). I have no plans to do it myself, but it's fascinating to watch other people's projects. and I wasn't even one to watch DIY shows.

jeanontheroad, that was as inappropriate comment, as we don't know anything about Techdog's life--who was perhaps paying off massive college debts, or waiting until children were grown or whatever.

Welcome Techdog. Tell us about yourself.

Took me a lot of years to get my ridiculous stupid mistakes paid for, had a dream and got out of trouble, saved and kept refining what I wanted and kept on saving and finally got my camper and paid cash for it, no more loans for me!
Tell us more about you Tech dog

Welcome Techdog, I'll probably be saving for years too, it's giving me time to really hone my vision of how I want to live, which can only be a good thing :)

PassT, I think most here are with you, raise your reputation !

Hiya TechDog!

I'd go for the stepvan...because, well because they're the funnest thing on the road!! :D

I LOVE my steppies!

I cannot figure out how to add a link to my friend's bus....
search "The Cobra Cabaret" there a few videos of his burning bus.

I would like to think my dreams are always alive and well, whether they come true or not, and saving, well that is not the easiest thing to do with so many self-inflicted responsibilities that seem to happily multiply in the night while I'm sleeping...

I've had 2 stepvans so far -- back when I was twenty-something, my then sig o and I bought a step-van for next to nothing. It was a piece of cake to manifest as there was virtually no other responsibility in the way. I forget how it all happened, but the result was a neat, on the cheap, homemade everything that worked great. It was like camping inside instead of outside. I had my daughter in it. Later we tore everything out and used it to haul downed trees for a firewood business.

Then, in my thirty-somethings and single, I built it up, again on the cheap, and took off for lots of adventures, though I parted with the van after a couple of years.

In my forty-somethings, I bought another, but the timing wasn't right and I never did fix it up. It was a lesson about desire without conviction and I had other long-term responsibilities that took precedence. I ended up giving it away.

Now, in my sixty-somethings, I'm 'dreaming' of how I'd design my next one and what I'd do and where I'd go. I have no doubt I could turn this from a dream into my reality if and when I set my intention and plan, and that's for me to decide, just as you are doing, TechDog.

So here's an early New Year's toast to all for dreaming and saving!

IMHO you will never have enough. Best to start right now with what you HAVE. With age it begins to fade,,,,,,,,,,,

Adrian, I wouldn't say it fades with age. A true vagabond never loses the wanderlust.
Some want to travel, some of us need to seek out new things.
Anyone with what is considered good sense would agree that my itchy feet have been the cause of my social and financial demise from the gitgo.
Its like an addictive drug you're born to crave.

What do you need to go camping? Start with a car and a tent.

the bigger the vehicle the more money it will take.

To go soonest will require less space for most of us.

I suggest you start with the tent and move up.

Until then, study and plan and go camping as much as you can afford it.

Best, James AKA Lynx

Over the years I have had 3 VW Vanwagon campers, one Class C truck camper and one 23 foot holiday rambler, and for the last 6 or 7 years a tent, one on my avatar. Recently brother and I bought as 43 foot Holiday Rambler am going to try, no matter what I enjoy them all. Few years ago used tent to go always to Labrador time we got back 3 months had passed and 10,000 miles.

@AltTransBikes - thanks much

@Tallman - wow, you've done it all, it seems! I love tent camping, too, as long as an inflatable high bed comes along these days.

Merry Christmas to everyone! Like TechDog, I am inspired by so much I read on this wonderful forum and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Twokniveskatie and all the mods for their dedication -- the tlc shines through.
