Hey Fellow Van Lovers!

I have made a couple of posts but just to give a bit of a background, I bought a used Kia Sedona. I already pulled all the back seats out and made a bed/couch for sleeping. I took my ideas from the Westfalia. I have always loved those vans, but they are VERY expensive for a nice one and as time goes on, finding a nice one seems to be getting harder and harder. Also I know they have a lot of reliability issues, but I love the interior design.

So I guess as I'm dreaming about my next van. I'm thinking of the reliability of like a Sienna, but with a Westfalia interior. Too me that would be the coolest! So I'm looking online and I do see they have the rock n roll beds that are found in the Westfalias...and yeah they are pretty expensive. They also have the cabinet units with the Waeco CR 50 fridges and stove/sink combos. I see most are from the UK and again are kinda pricey (and I have no idea what shipping cost would be). So my question...does anyone know of a site or place that has plans on building your own rock n roll bed? Preferably out of wood since I don't know how to weld. Or are there any US sites that anyone knows of that may sell components like I mentioned?

Thanks for your help!

If you are referring to the fold out bench seat in the VW it was used in conjunction with the cargo area and cushions. You could possibly make a fold down passenger seat with locking together plywood panels and cushions to make a bed platform? Had a friend that did that with a Civic, called it the hondabago!

Yeah bullfrog I am referring to the VW camper van beds. Below is a short video.

Ok imbedding isn't working...but you can still click on the link.

Plans and components can be found on ebay.  The sellers are in UK but unless you are planning to go pick them up, it shouldn't much matter where it's being shipped from.

I looked hard at these after following Glenn Morrisette's conversion but it won't work for me personally.

Boat seats are made of wood and hinged to change from a front and back facing seat to a flat sleeping surface. You can also modify the sliding slat bed to work, or just build a plywood platform. You might be able to cut and bolt a metal cot frame as well.

Above is my interpretation of a rock n roll bed. I just think the real ones look more professional/factory. Sorry my van looks like a mess, but I was still testing and fitting. I still need to do a lot of details to make it more pretty and camping friendly, but the main bed/couch frame is done. Now I need to make some cushion covers and black out curtains!

I will admit posting the above pics was a bitch! It took me over an hour to get them posted. In addition seems they won't post if I add any text to the reply. I post photos on the web all the time, but man I struggled with those.

Thanks Mayble!! That is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I need to learn how to weld!

Bullfrog, thanks. If you look at my pics that is kinda what I did. I just think the real rock n roll bed looks so much more professional.

"I just think the real rock n roll bed looks so much more professional."

If you can afford the expense, fine. But who are you trying to impress?

TrainChaser...Who am I trying to impress?...The mini camper van groupies! With my current setup they barely say Hi. But I heard if I had a professional looking camper van with a rock n roll bed they would come running and flash me their boobies! LOL!!! Just kidding!

Well I guess our vans are like houses. You normally don't buy a house because it is all worn out and looks like crap. Even if it does, you usually buy it with plans on fixing it up to make it look nice. Same with my van. I was just hoping there were plans or ideas how to make something similar out of wood. You know so the groupies will flash me! :)

I guess I will quit dreaming and just continue working on the one I have. Once I get covers for the cushions and I am going to use a bed skirt stapled around the perimeter of the platforms, it will look much nicer. But I know my current van won't last forever and if I do upgrade to something nice in the future, I was thinking a rock n roll bed would be a good choice.

Nice job, thanks!

Check out imgur, easy galleries, lots of apps to help from all platforms, then just point URLs from anywhere

:D Isn't in a shame that more females aren't showing you, a stranger their breasts.  Maybe if you drove your minivan down a high crowned washboarded road  your bed would truly Rock and Roll and your wish would come true?  Then again mabe not.

I thought I might revive this thread a bit.  I too would like to make a bed with the rock and roll style.  Specifically the 2 section style (not 3) that is mounted to the side.  I found this pics on pinterest but couldn't follow it to the original post.  But this is what I would love to make in wood as well.  You can order the hinges on ebay for about $100

Here is the (way expensive) metal, orderable version mentioned earlier in the thread...

Anyone here try their hand at making this in wood?

Link?

Maybe adapt a futon design, I've seen a few different hinge types for those.

Ideal for me would be adaptable for

1. fully upright for travel and eating, writing
2. slightly back for reading, relaxed conversation
3. zero gravity for cinema mode, reading, naps
4. dead flat for night sleeping

Yes you lose some storage underneath, unless you don't mind using bins, stash under for travel, pull out for 2&3

For #3, a drop-down big screen, maybe up to 4'

I know bit over the top. . .
