I've found some "van rescue" videos on YouTube and this one is the best. It's so beautifully filmed and very inspirational.
About 13 minutes long.

Incredibly well done. Thanks for sharing that. It was really entertaining.

Being a VW guy, while I applaud your efforts it would have been so much more pleasant to do this work in a "proper" garage.
Anyway, glad to see you salvage an old split window unit!

Yeah, that's what 99% would do, tow it to a garage, build it up there. These guys took so much time and loving care to bring all those parts up, and drive it back down off of a mountain! Don't know what they'll do about all that eh, body rust, but a very nice van rescue story. Cool Johnny Cash songs too.

Those old Type 2 units are so collectable now that virtually every body panel is being reproduced today. It will be a lot of work but it can be "easily" restored with off the shelf bits.

Sadly, here's my buddies unit shortly after a full multi-year restoration was completed last Winter......

OUCH! That hurts to look at, especially knowing it was once restored. :(  What caused the fire?

Gotta Bump this thread as I thought it was super cool, and some of the newer folk might enjoy seeing it.

Glad you Bumped it!   My first bus was a '62 Westy.   When I bought it in 1967 it had a blown engine.
With help of several friends we pulled the old engine & slid it out on a ramp of 2x4s.  Other than that
it was pretty clean, although someone had replaced the windshield wiper motor upside down!

The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, & Painted Desert made for a thrilling maiden voyage.  After that,
I was hooked.  I've got a beautiful 1985 Wolfsburg Westy in the driveway that I bought from the original
owner in '99.  I must sell it, but am having a hard time coming to terms...also no longer have access
to a competent water boxer guru.  The MexiCali Rose, my third Westy, needs repairs.
I will grieve when she goes...

Peace & Love
