I am searching for a larger apartment size to run from a solar source. Looking at the heavy insulated chest type they are pricey. Any recommendations will be very helpful.

Give us a better idea of your price range. You can buy a Whynter 65 qt 12 volt chest for $500. Is that too much? What is the most you want to pay?

Hey Bob! I am looking for one to use in my home solar for my two boys living in the in-law. $1200 tops, chests are more efficient uprights more convenient Looking at sunstar and other super insulated compressor style. If you have any ideas on that. Trying to get my youngest interested in solar as he needs direction and inspiration, thanks Adrian

If you want to use an inverter, look to energy star ratings for the most efficient fridge. If you want to stay with 12 volts, Whynter has a combination freezer/refrigerator for about $720 on Amazon.

I'm extremely happy with my Whytner 12 volt fridge freezer an highy recommend them.

Oddly enough, Home Depot sells them for a very good price. They don't have them in the store but you can get them off the Net and have them delivered to the store for free.

The big advantage is if it breaks soon after you buy it you can return it to the store without shipping.

Now you got me curious. Is the Whytner fridge better than the Dometic fridge? Or just different?

I have both a Dometic 25 quart and a Whytner 65 quart. In every way except one the Whytner is better. Better insulation, better door-seal, better construction, better hinges. If draws more power, but comes on much less often so the total daily draw is less on the Whytner.

BUT, the Dometic has a Danfoss brand compressor which has an outstanding reputation. The Whytner has a Chinese compressor. Only time will tell if that really matters. As of now I like the Whytner MUCH more than i like the Dometic.

If they had no badges and I had never seen or heard of either of them before, I would guess the Whytner was a high-quality American-made product and the Dometic was cheap Chinese junk.

Interesting, thanks! My Dometic is holding up so far since I got it a year ago new from a Camping World store. Maybe if my Dometic fridge ever dies, I'll try the Whytner brand. Good to know there are decent choices out there. :)
