The Wilco Offroad Hitchgate looks fancy. It sure is expensive. I'm now pretty set on trying out the folding rear-bumper mounted tire carrier I linked to in my comment above:

It's only thirty-something dollars. Then I won't be messing around putting holes in the door. I just need to check that it will fit on my bumper first.

that tire carrier doesn't look to sturdy to me. remember if your tire comes off on the highway and causes an accident or worse you are responsible. highdesertranger

That tire carrier is made to go on the back square bumper of a TT. It "should" hold a trailer sized spare tire with no problems. Mounting it to your present bumper will be where the problems arise.
