Hi Ramblin, in the past we were about 6 miles form town, so only the brave walked or rode their bikes. This year we will be at a new location, and we will be much closer to town, so walking/biking will be easier. I'm a big walker so I may try walking into town for my morning or evening walk

Quartzsite is a very interesting place (I love it) so the majority do go into town daily or at least several times a week. It is a certainty that you will make many new friends and you can catch a ride with someone. Finding parking generally isn't too hard. When the Big Tent RV show starts, the number of people in the area will double or triple and traffic can be very, very bad. Fortunately, our new location on the East side of town will make getting around much, much easier. We were on the west side of town and that meant crossing the worst part of the traffic, now we will miss it.

It also really helps to know the shortcuts, and by now I am starting to learn them so we can avoid the worst of the traffic.

And yes, if you are in a van, your home goes into town with you. Bob

I've got a couple friends that go to Quartzite every year. They keep telling me I should come along and have fun. These folks have a big diesel pusher RV, and my other friend has a travel trailer. I keep telling them, No thanks, I want my own vehicle to travel in. I like my independence.
Interestingly enough, this is what started my hunt for a good livable van.
This sounds very good.I was big on walking and hiking once upon a time, but lately my knee has been giving me fits.
-Bruce

At this RV show, are there good deals on used, small, RVs? Or is this mainly a "showroom" event?

TT,I've seen plenty of bulletin boards with what appears to be good deals and at the end of the show and season they get better. Never looked at any though.

One of the reason I love to go to Q is the tons of cool, different and downright weird rigs but as Cyndi sez, there are lots of stuff for sale including used rigs of all kinds...
Bri

Thanks, Bri and Cyndi. I'm thinking of showing up at RTR even if I don't have an RV yet, and checking around that area when I'm there.

This is going to sound stipid to you. But what is quartzsite.
where is it. what goes on there . when is it and for how many days does it last could you explain RTrs and what goes on there as well

Hi Tammi,
Sounds good. We have had several people at the RTR sleeping in tents....or if you can sleep in your car, you will be fine.

Howardsells2000, no worries! Quartzsite is a town in Arizona close to the California border and during the winter it is a mecca for Rvers in the desert around it and there are hundreds of vendors of all manner of things....an enormous flea market really.

At the Rubber Tramp Rondy (RTR) we meet in a pre-designated place...this year it will be new...watch for Bob's announcement on this forum. We camp wherever we want to around a central campfire area and have workshops, campfires, b.s.ing....and occasionally eat together...

It is very loosely knit and there are no fees, etc. You just have to sign in with the host of the area and that gives you 14 days of free camping.

Vandwellers come and go and you would have the chance to meet many of us face to face....I enjoy it a lot but only stay for a week or so before i have had enough of Quartzsite and the Rondy...that is just me though.

If you google Quartzsite you will get some good hits. If you go to the portion of this site "Cheaprvliving"that talks about the Rubbertramp rondy it is explained....

Hope that helps...

Bri

I'm going to try and make it there this coming year.

I'm hoping to be there too. No van yet, so I'll be in my Volvo station wagon. Unfortunately, I just got hit with an unexpected dental emergency that wiped out my funds for the trip, but I have time to make it up. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Wondering what's the situation for organic produce there? LocalHarvest.org shows a farmer's market 27 miles away, but I'm hoping for something closer.

Quartzsite is pretty bad for any groceries -- overpriced and poor selection. Blythe (15 miles away) is a bit better.

Good to know, thanks. I'll try to come well stocked.

Definitely bring food, especially if you prefer to eat Organic!

Quartzite, AZ (3,000 year round residents) prices will be pretty high.

Blythe, CA (20,000 people) about 30 minutes away, due west, will be pretty good.

Yuma, AZ (190,000 people) about an hour or 1.5 hours away, due south, will have whatever you are looking for.

Phoenix, AZ (1.5 million people) is about 2hrs away due east from Quartzite, and will have everything.

Definitely check out a map, Quartzite is on the AZ and California border due west from Phoenix on I-10 (which will be on every map of AZ for sure).

so like blars said, quartzite will have the basic requirements and a high price, Blythe will have a fairly good selection of things at an ok price, and Yuma and Phoenix will have everything you want.

Thanks, I'm coming from San Diego, about 4 hours away. I'll bring a couple of coolers full and see how that works. This will be good practice!

I hope to see you all there. If I make it there I will either be in a camper on my little Ford Ranger or in my car, as I have no "rig" yet.

What about bathroom facilities? Are there portajohns or do we do our duty the old fashioned way by digging catholes? I've been living out of my van now for over a month but I've managed to avoid using my lugable loo by using public restrooms.
