One thing I enjoy is gardening and canning fresh foods. I notice that many people have stated they find it difficult to enjoy fresh foods on the go due to refrigeration or storage concerns, being on the move a lot etc. and thus resort to lots of dried and canned goods. That got me thinking about how to enjoy the freshest and organic fruits and veg while traveling with the seasons and getting the most fun out of gardening at the same time. I was reminiscing about peaches, you know the kind that one bite and the juice runs down your chin? Fresh pecans and walnuts. Apple and cherry cider. A tomato warmed by the sun and eaten with just a sprinkle of salt. So, I thought, since I'm traveling all over hell and high water with the seasons, why not stop and PYO ~ Pick Your Own? Turns out there is a fabulous little website, on the order of freecampsites.com that shows all the farms offering this, along with grass fed beef, honey, eggs etc. All you gotta do is check the area of the state you're in and go for it. What a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon, stock up on fresh food supplies and get the best fresh food.

Here is the website for those who are interested: http://www.pickyourown.org/

That's awesome! There are websites that list the local farmers markets in different areas too for those who don't want to pick their own or can't pick their own. There will be websites that list some of the organic farms in an area too. I don't know if either of those would have a national type website or not. I'm so glad you mentioned the PYO or I wouldn't have remembered about the other options to get farm fresh food while traveling. :)

I noticed there are many different kinds of farms while perusing the different states - pyo, already picked, organic, natural, most are family owned, foods are listed by months seasons, dates, times, farm websites, contacts to call ahead etc. Really versatile and it's awesome that so many of the little farming towns also have nice free park like campsites (w/free water, electric and dumps!) too. I'm going to stay on the backroads, the places the freeways and interstates bypass, but where all the first road trippers and trains traveled. I love small town America.

I like, no I really like. thanks for the link. there is nothing better than fresh picked produce. again thanks. I like the little produce stands in rural areas. also the farmers selling fresh eggs. highdesertranger

Never heard the cryptic term "PYO", down here it's called "You Pick'em".  We also go to the various Farmers' Markets to buy fresh veggies and fruits.  One has a restaurant on the side that will take your picks and cook a meal for you.  Being that it is a sixty mile drive from me, it makes a good lunch break before motoring back home.

Thanks for that link, i've book marked and filed it!   It reminded me that somewhere I saw info about working on small organic farms,,,,Might be a good way to make a few bucks or even swap some labor for a nice quiet shady spot to camp...Barter Is Better    :D    Jewellann
