Anyone have a proximity alarm installed in the van? I just got this installed the other day. I now have literally 4 separate electronic alarms installed to the van...sick, I know.

So now, let's say the front windows are down partially. With the proximity alarm engaged, if an intruder were to say place a hand through the open window, the alarm sounds. Or even if the window were up, if an intruder tried to use a special glass cutter, again the alarm would sound.

Also added a backup alarm with its own separate power source, so that in case the main alarm gets deactivated due to intruder cutting the power source, the secondary alarm will still sound no matter what. Actually, if the alarm were to sound for any reason, 2 separate alarms would ring simultaneously, both the primary and backup alarms.

The installer told me that most "advanced" thieves don't expect a car owner to have 2 separate alarms installed, as usually it's only one alarm or none at all. Having a second backup alarm with its own power source would most likely deter both the casual thief and the more determined thief. That's according to the installer...makes sense.

The secondary alarm even sounds if somewhere were to try to somehow tamper the main battery, such as removing the battery or disengaging it...again the alarm sounds. The installer gave me a set of keys for manual override of the secondary alarm in case I need to have a mechanic service the battery.

Geez, too much technology, and way too many keys.

LOL

You may be woken up more often with that prox-alarm. Let us know how it works out

I already found out from the installer that with the proximity alarm activated, any person inside moving around would trip the alarm. Even a dog inside the vehicle would trip the alarm. So obviously, that would not be be do-able. I would only use the proximity alarm if I'm outside. When I'm inside the vehicle, I would simply lock the doors from inside.

I was disappointed to find out a particular shortcoming of the proximity alarm. It has to do with the window tint added to my front windows. Normally, if say an intruder were to stick his nose up close to the window (say within 2 inches), the proximity alarm would sound. The proximity alarm sensitivity can be tuned as to how close an intruder can get to the vehicle before tripping the alarm.

But because my window tint has metallic elements contained, the proximity sensor will not give out the normal chirping warning sound on the first intrusion. The proximity alarm has a problem in that metal objects will obstruct the invisible beam from working. That means the proximity alarm will fully sound upon first intrusion detected, as opposed to first giving out a warning chirp. Since I like having my windows tinted and I'm not willing to take off the tint, that means I will have to live with the limitation. Oh well.

As I said before, it is a sickness, haha![/align]

Oh no...now you need a back-up system for the back-up :s

There is no cure for my backup for backup for backup sickness, by the way. You should see my set of spare keys...that's out of control!

If anyone is curious, the 4 separate alarms installed in the same vehicle are:

1) Viper electronic alarm system (with remote keyless entry, remote engine start, and kill switch)
2) Additional separate alarm for rear window break-in detection
3) Proximity alarm
4) Backup alarm with its own separate power source (which will sound simultaneously with primary alarm)

I am sick. Or maybe my van is sick. I'm not sure which.

Oh good idea…. someone mentioned "a back-up" set of keys in the thread about the "Fort-Knox like Secure Van" and it reminded me that I need to get a spare set of keys and figure out a way to "secure" them…. maybe a proximity alarm….hmmmm….lol.

I have a total of 3 Viper alarm remotes. Why three? Cuz I place them in different locations so I can't possibly lose all 3 at the same time.

I just replaced the battery inside the main Viper remote that I regularly use. I noticed the remote was getting a little sluggish for the remote door entry. Sometimes I would have to press a second time for it to work.

With the new battery installed inside the Viper remote, I noticed it's now more responsive. The remote door locks now open upon the first press. My advice is to change your battery inside the remote regularly every so often, as you don't want it to fail on you while trying to get inside and drive away at an inopportune time.

Heck, even this little battery operated motion sensor alarm works pretty well. I also have this, and it works. I saw a guy on YouTube use such a device to protect his generator behind his trailer. I also have multiple battery operated motion sensor lights as well. Gotta love those motion sensor alarms and lights !

Oh, awesome! You are totally covered from one end to the other, and your ends even have backup!

I have an alarm sticker on my car, but it is not active. I figure the only warning a potential jerk trying to get in my window would be me yelling "WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING???" :)

I can do a good Tasmanian Devil impression. It has run off more than one stray dog, and several drunk teens.

I snicker sometimes when I hear a car alarm.
I used to hang out in a little town with a popular tourist tavern. Locals would gather on the porch with their beers watching the hoopla. About the time hot food came to a tourist's table one of the guys would kick a bumper and set off the alarm. The person had to go reset (before pocket remotes were everywhere) while locals laughed and his food got cold.
Guys on the porch would taunt with things like, "If we wanted your car that alarm wouldn't slow us down".
They were a bored bunch :s

I'm now considering adding the ultimate, which is the "breath" alarm.
You so much as breath on my vehicle, and the alarm will start blaring.
Plus send out 1 million volts of electricity to jolt you to the next county, haha!

There is a way to combine a "bug zapper" ;) but you have to be 100% sure your polarity is right. Otherwise ~~~ well you know. :p
