I have a Brother inkjet MFC-465CN with a huge external ink cartridge that lasts for at least a year.

Since I only print in black, I can use the other 3 color cartridges for a back up ink supply.

If you want cheap printing, I highly recommend this.

What do you carry?

My printer is similar to this:

I carry a Canon IP100 when traveling, it's my only printer, I use it at home as well. It's not much bigger than a laptop and has served me quite well for the last 7 or 8 years. It has small ink cartridges, so they don't last as long as their larger counterparts. I always have a back up set of cartridges on hand. I don't print much so they last me a while. I'd guess I may print 100 pages per year on average. Looks like they discontinued it, and the few left on Amazon are going for an outrageous amount.

Looks like they replaced it with this one, should mine ever need replacing I'd go with this

I'm having a hard time imagining what I'd need a printer on the road for.  I haven't even had one in my home for years.

In the four years I've been on the road, I've needed to print out something only a half dozen times. Passport renewal forms, Mexican insurance documents, and so on. I used places like libraries, FedEx Office, Staples, etc. in the closest town.

I used to but I'd go on 3 month stretches where I wouldn't use it, so the jets would dry out. I'd have to run several cleaning cycles to clear it, which would often run through the last of my ink. It's cheaper for me to go to Fedex for the 6 times a year I have something to print, and I save that valuable bit of interior space. If they made a compact clog-resistant printer I might go for it.

Do those Walmart photo printing centers also do documents? I haven't gotten around to trying that yet, it would add a lot of potential locations for me.

Put me in the 'I don't print enough to justify the space/expense' group.  I've never had a problem having Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers, PDF, JPG formats printed at the aforementioned places.  I'll have to check out Walmart.

I don't see why you can't make a document into a photo and print it like that?

Printers are now so cheap and ink cartridges so expensive that it's almost worth it to just throw away the printer and buy a new one every time it's out of ink......

But since I print virtually nothing (tax forms once a year, that's about it) I have no printer. Just my thumb drive and the nearest UPS Store or whatever.

I no longer own a printer either. When someone tells me I can print their forms off the net, I ask them to mail it to me. Even the IRS forms. I've gone back to the old ways, mostly. It still works but does get you some strange looks now and then. Oh, and I pay with cash for everything.

Stress levels have gone to almost zero.

Literally only time I use my printer is to print out resume for job interviews. Or applications. Not sure why else Id need a printer

Seems like there are so many places that will print stuff for you absolutely anywhere.Printers are not worth the space on the road.I'm very far from a staples, fedex, etc. My local library will print anything for .10 per page and usually there is even a grocery store that has a front office that cashes checks, sells stamps and prints things.

I brought my printer with me, but the one time I needed it (when I renewed my registration online and had to print a temp one) my jets had dried out. Still haven't gotten it working though I replaced all the ink. Epson printers by the way, won't even print in black if one of the colors is low. What a rip off.

I figured out a way to avoid the resume game when applying for new jobs.  Working at my last real job, when they posted a new job, we'd get 100's of resumes.  Unless their initial email stood out, they went in the trash pile.

For my next job, I just sent an email with a short paragraph of my job experience and an offer to come in and work for free for the week.  If you like me, I stay on and you can pay me for the 1st week or not and if you don't like me we both part ways no harm done.

I've been hired 3 for 3 with this method and haven't worked for free yet.

My Canon IP100 has gone at least a few six month stretches with out printing, a winter of freezing and thawing temps and so far it's always printed when needed. One time the ink was frozen and I had to wait a few hours for it to thaw, but still printed once it warmed up.

However, I think I could survive with out one too, but I have it and it's space requirements are very minimal, so for now it lives on.

It's the principle made famous by Kodak and Gillette. Almost give away the camera or razor but make your money on the film or blades.

This extended cartridge solves the costly ink problem and the ink cost becomes negligible:

I also carry a Canon ip100, very pleased with it, it's smaller than the ream of paper that goes with it. After 10 years of carrying a printer in a van, I've never had any ink dry or clog up.

I spend my time in places where the kinds of places you list here are FAR away, but a post office to drop mail is reasonably close.
