I was not sure my battery box was all that air tight, nor was it designed to be. I use a small muffin fan to pull air from the box. Pushing air into the box could force fumes from any unintentional leaks around the box or wires. In 60 years of working around batteries, I saw three explode. One was with a cigar while the battery was 'fast' charging'. Second was using a match for light while checking if the battery was charging. The third was determined to be using a charge maintainer on a battery with dry plates. None of these were my mistake. I have seen photos of other failed batteries. In a open configuration, the only place hydrogen will be at an explosive concentration will be in the cells and immediately above the cells. In a closed box, any thing goes.
