I hope to be in Ajo AZ (southwest AZ) Nov 20 for a paint-out on the 21.
Any other painters or vandwellers planning to be nearby then?
I don't know where I'll camp, there's BLM land nearby, 14 day stay.

what's a 'paint-out'???

(I should probably know this stuff!) :/

pleinair, I like paint out better because I can't spell worth a darn. I guess there are little contests as well. Anything to get our work out there. I haven't done one yet.

I've got a house sit scheduled in Northwest AZ scheduled around those dates. RATS!

Won't be there, but if you get into Gila Bend stop by the Space Age diner, we used to go there when I was a kid in the 60's and we went back a few years ago, fun and kitschy place.

Ajo to Quartzite 172 miles
Ajo to Yuma 160 miles
Thanks, Queen. There is some chance that will happen!
Oh, no, Cyndi--or, good for you! We'll meet another time.

Ajo is very near to Organ Pipe National Monument, which is an amazingly stunning part of the desert.

ok Patrick asked but I didn't understand the answer. what is a paint out? highdesertranger

Often it's an advertised set date for a group of artists to meet at a location to paint in an area.
An artist takes his/her materials and paints a scene or two, (or more) depending on time, including number of days.
This one is advertised through the Tuscon Plein Air Painters Society. Sometimes they have a "show and tell" at a lunch.

Sometimes a paint-out is advertised as a competition with rules, a showing/sale at the end of the day or days..
For an example, go to http://createeugene.com/plein-air-paint-2015/ to see how theirs is done. It looks like theirs was one day, some places do 2-3 days.

I don't yet know how this one is handled. AFAIK, this one is not a competition, just a place for members to meet as a group and paint in an area. Of course, people get spread out in a large area as settings capture an eye.

Patrick and Diane, I apologize. I didn't see your posts.
Diane, http://tpaps.com/paintout-schedule.html I would love to meet you there! I hope you make it. (I hope I make it! LOL! I'll get to meet IVY!

I enjoy plein air painting--painting outside at the scene. This painting is one of my goals for traveling. There's about a two hour window to complete a painting before the light changes so much that there's a different scene in front of the artist.

Yeah, plein air...I got it!!

Actually, I now have myself a groovy completely self-contained mobile plein-air paint station, with it's own easel. (I suppose most of 'em do)

I've got a fascination about learning how to paint moving water, and luckly for me...we've got LOTS of that in these parts! :D

I'm in the process of teaching myself better landscape techniques, and this is a Huge part of that lesson.

In time, I may even take a class or two from one of masters. (I ADORE 'Art of the West' magazine!!)

I recently painted (this one watercolor--which I know nothing about.[of the OTHER many things I'm learning])
a pond scene: a wall, a HUGE tree and some bushes and grasses reflected in this still pond, the surface of which was smooth as glass. I have work to do, lol! I'll take oils soon and do it again. I preferoil, but often do a wc sketch first.
What kind of set-up do you have? I don't have one made for plein air. Just an easel, a box, and a couple of chairs.
I'd love to have both a wet canvas carrier and a wet palette carrier, too.

Been using one of those eisel/paintbox combo devices and toying with bringing one to the RTR, here is a Marin headland painting i did in the early 90's

Bring it, sounds like there will be several artists. Being an artist tends to be a lonely thing and it feels good to be around other artists. I'm looking forward to it.
Where are you now?

I am in San Francisco getting ready for my nephews wedding party and will be in Dyer Nevada after the 15th. I tried to connect last RTR with other painters but it did not work out.

Ella1, have you tried Water Miscible Oils? I've used Acrylics in the past, but I worry about them on the road as they don't respond well to freezing temps. I use the Golden Paints line and I've been very happy with them. Best part is no need for Turps or other solvents as they clean up with soap and water!

dwartix  I've been to a few places I didn't dare use much water. I've switched to palette knives for much of my work now. I'm not good enough to do my small format work with them though.  I picked up some coffee filters, I'm going to try to see if they will work on my paint water and will let you know. The painting on the table was mostly palette knives.  I just have plastic ones and they worked well enough for me. I like to finger paint too but baby wipes work to clean my hands.
