OK, I know, always follow all the rules.  Don't drink the coffee at McDs because it could burn you.  Never run w scissors. . .  So on and so forth.

Now that that's out of the way, has anyone on this forum ever had health problems due to off gassing from lead acid batteries.  I will have to use lead acid for the first 4 mo till I can upgrade to agms.  I don't want to cut a hole in my van to vent the batteries if I don't have to.
On the other hand if I do vent the batteries, do the gasses rise (vent from the top of the sealed box) or do the gasses sink (vent through the bottom of the box).

By the way I'm Tim and new to the group.  This is my first posting.  I am building my Van and hope to be full time by Nov 1st then slowly driving to the RTR.  This forum and the "BW effect"  in general have been a great resource.

If i posted anything wrong or broke any rules, tell me now or I'll make a habit of it!

Tim

Hydrogen is light and goes up.

Mostly the gassing happens at the end of charging.  If your charging is solar then gassing is an afternoon thing.  If you charge by driving leave a window open and the 30 mph venting will keep it flushed out.  If you use shore power and a battery charger the same shore power can run a small fan.

I have never seen anyone on this forum get chastized for running with scissors.  I occasionally do run with scissors.  : )

I have been told that it does not take a big vent for the gasses. That said even with AGM venting is needed to keep them from getting hot.

couple of things, first off AGM batteries are also lead acid. however they only off gas when over charged.

as far as breaking rules you haven't yet. go to the "Newcomers corner" and give us an intro we will give you an official welcome and a link to the rules. highdesertranger

I have 6 EGC2 batteries in a custom box. A hole low on one end and a small computer muffin fan high on the other end sucking the air through the box. My charging parameters are set to the battery specs. The small fan keeps the fume moving, diluted, and no problem for this old ruffian. Some others may be sensitive. When I equalize, the van doors are open and I keep an eye on things.

Oh. dang. we have to stop the games.
