I had a 2013 4 cylinder manual transmission 4x4 Tacoma with an ARE wedge topper that I really liked. I started towing a 4' x 6' utility trailer full of totes of camping equipment and it worked well. I later built an enclosed 80" cube enclosed trailer to live out of that weighed less than 2,000 lbs. loaded and didn't like it when towing as top speeds depending on wind going uphill were sometimes as slow as 50 MPH and the fuel mileage was worst than if I had gotten the v6 with an automatic! I would highly recommend you rent a UHaul cargo trailer and test out your plan before purchasing a cargo trailer. There is a site, tnttt.com that has a foamies thread as well as a towing thread and a cargo trailer build out thread that might be of help as well.
